Cherry cobbler

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Has anyone ever done a cobbler, using the Dutch oven? We have a house full, with more coming in a couple of days, and I hope to cook outside to keep the indoor temp down. Have a sack full of fresh picked cherries. Cobbler sounds like the easiest and best way to use them. [p]
Thanks!

Bear Country Woman,[p] Since I was 12 and first saw a Dutch Oven :) First meal I cooked in a dutch oven was Baked Ham, Baked Potatoes and a Peach Cobbler..[p] WOW that was 41 years ago... Love Da Iron :)

  • Celtic Wolf,[p]Would I do this the same way in the egg? Do I have to pile hot coals on top, or just put the lid on and bake away? These are fresh picked cherries from my daughter's tree in CA, an unusual treat, so assume I prepare the cherries as in a pie.

Bear Country Woman,[p] Just put the lid on and bake away. Most Dutch Oven recipes are for the camp dutch oven, but a dutch oven is a dutch oven as long as it's iron.. [p] Can I ask where in CA? I am looking for a source of cherry wood :)[p] Ohh yes and prepare those cherries the same way you would a pie.

  • Celtic Wolf,[p]Sacramento area, in the foothills. They are traveling right now. The cherry tree is a very heavy producer this year, and they have no way of getting to the top to pick them, so - she said since the tree needed pruning anyway, they cut off a couple of branches, and picked them clean. They have wood on the ground at the moment, but don't know what their plans are for it.

Bear Country Woman,[p] I am in Stockton.. If they are going to part with the wood I'll be happy to haul it off..
  • Bear Country Woman,
I imagine a dutch oven recipe will work good. However, I cooked a simple blackberry cobbler after kabobs, etc. yesterday in a throw away pan and it was trmendous. Just a hint of the smoky flavour and the top browned up just wonderfully. I used the Plate setter (inverted with the grill up on top of the leggs) and 350 degree temp and it took about 1 hour. Add a dollup of icecream for the best cobbler ever!
