<p />Sandman,

Well, you'd certainly get some burnt spots. I've been grilling them at 350 with olive oil and some spices - usually just salt and pepper.
I sit them on the edge of the grate and they are done in 45 minutes with a couple turns along the way.
I don't wrap them, or puncture them and they come out great every time.
I might try direct on the coals once because I like when the skin gets dark and crispy. Spuds is pretty cheap ya know.

hayhonker,
As a Scout, we would always wrap them in foil and bury them into the campfire before we started cooking and the were great.

360 guy,
YES! That brought back some memories just now. Many fond memories from scouting. Eggs cooked in an orange peel, winter survival camping trips making your own shelter, etc etc. Good stuff. Certainly if wrapped in foil you could plop a spud in the coals.

Sandman,
Do mine one hour direct 325/350.Poke skins with wita a fork, add EVOO,kosher salt and let it rock.To make it better,do a twice baked tater.Scoop the tater out of the skin, add tbls.mayo, grated cheese of your choice and stuff back into the shell till cheese melts.Good eats.

360 guy,
Remember those delicious meals myself. Foil, layer of potatoes, layer of onions, then more potatoes, then a big hunk of hamburger meat, then repeat in reverse and wrap. bury in the coals and in 30 minutes eat right out of the foil!!

Sandman,[p] To answer your question - Yes you can throw them as is into the coals. Make sure they are of a fair size.[p] Take them out when they look like the surrounding Charcoal/Lump. Break them in half and scoop out the middles.
Best Baked Potatoes I ever had...[p]PS This is also a Boy Scout method..
PSS: You can do them as other suggested too, but they won't quite tatse as good

ronbeaux,[p] 8oz cup, Large Egg fill with water, place in fire. When Paper burns down to egg you have an almost perfect 3 minute Egg[p] 16oz Cup 5 minute Eggs[p] Just make sure it's paper coated in wax.[p] Styrofoam Cup = Burnt Whole Egg

Why do the Boy Scouts always get to learn the cool stuff? I was in the Girl Scouts and all I learned was how to sell cookies.
My mom was a Girl Scout leader or whatever the heck they are called, but I defected because I didn't want to make pressed flower collages or learn how to knit. I hid in the woods with "John Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival" and had way more fun than they ever did.

Lady Baden Powell the answer to that one. Unfortuneately for you, like her husband, she is now deceased...[p]BOy Scouts is where I first learned how to really cook and I did it a set of Camp Dutch Ovens..[p]
