Bands on a new large

After sever years of arm twisting, one of my friends finally gave up. We picked up a large for hime yesterday. Finally I'll be able to eat egged food from someone else!
The spring bands on the egg do not have a registration pin or anything (like my old hinge) and the bottom band came off when we were loading. I am not sure if it wants to spring open, it diddn't come totally off, and we managed to get it back together.
Will it spring open if it comes off? How much to tighten? And what's the best way to realign if needed?
Thanks,
Justin
