thermometer broke

My thermometer seemed a little off so I tried to take it out to adjust it, but due to the gunk on the stem it was very snug and broke. Fortunately I have one on the mini I can swap back and forth until I get a replacement.
I noticed in a thread a while back where several are not securing the thermometer with the clip on the inside of the egg. My question is how deep the stem needs to be into the egg, and what is used to keep it from falling out when not using the clip on the inside.
Thank you so much for your guidance.
