I just tried the recipe Dad's Delicious Big Green Burgers tonight. My burgers were good but cooked to long. Any suggestions for next time?[p]Randy

I like to cook my burgers just like steaks, I use a fairly thick burger, cook direct at about 600° for 2 - 3 minutes on one side, flip them, cook for about the same, then shut the vents and don't open the egg for about 8 - 12 minutes. Be careful to avoid backdraft or flash fire when you open the egg to check the burgers. Mine come out really great that way. I have also cooked them at about 350° for about 15 - 20 minutes or so, which worked fine, but I prefer the other method, also, it makes good practice for more expensive steaks. Are you checking them with a thermometer? They do cook just a little bit more after they are pulled off the fire, so you might pull them off about 5 degrees cooler than you think you should.

    Good luck!

    Iwantogrill,
    um
don't cook them as long?[p]how do you like them? rare/med-rare/med/well?[p]they won't take long at 600-700 degrees.
try to get into the habit of flipping once, maybe 3 minutes at 700, max.[p]been a while, but that's where i'd start.
then flip, 3 more minutes and check.[p]

  • stike,[p]I know that they were cooked to long. I'm trying to learn how to cook on my egg! I don't have a problem cooking on my Weber's. I used the recipe off the BGE recipe section.

    Iwantogrill,
i'd say follow your experience and just use the recipe as a guide.[p]if you have a 'clincher', your favorite thing to cook on the weber, you might try cooking that next, and watching it like a hawk. then you'll see what differences there are between the weber and the egg. in general, i'd imagine that things you sear can be done sooner (because you can get higher temps on the egg compared to the weber, from what i understand), and things that you smoke can go longer and will be moister.[p]i only had a gasser, so at least you were cooking over a real fire before....[p]good luck.

  • I think what's been most upsetting with my egg learning curve is that when I have followed recipes/techniques from this board(things that everybody raves about) they are not coming out the same. I know that all cooks are different but I am a perfectionist about my cooking.[p]FYI my "failures" with the egg have been better than a most of my cooks on my gasser/kettle. Lol.[p]
