Cleaning mold

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
I haven't used my Egg since end of last fall. It sat all winter and has got moldy all up the walls and on the metal grill. I'm wondering two things: why it got so moldy (since it should self clean)? and What should I use to clean it?[p]I'm guessing it got moldy because I may not have let it burn long and hot enough after cooking or that particular meal was really greasy and should have been cleaned up after. Anyone have any thoughts?[p]Lastly I was thinking of cleaning it with bleach water. Any reason I might not want to do that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Paddy,
Just remember, nothing can live thru 600 degrees. Light it up and let'r rip.

    Paddy,
You do not need to clean it with anything. You really should not put any chemicals inside it for cleaning. Like Rich said fire it up....it'll be like a self cleaning oven. I'd stir around the old left over lump a bit then dump in enough fresh to fill the firebox 1/2 way or so then light it and open the bottom vent and take off whatever style cap your using and let her go into volcano mode. If the grid is really gross you can scrap it down before the coming inferno. The only inside cleaning I ever do other than the above is occasionally brush the dome to shed it of the black flaky stuff that can accumulate there.[p]H

    Paddy,
Ummm, the Egg is only self cleaning if you use it. Moisture can collect inside the Egg and thus you will get mold. Mold spores are in the air everywhere around us. If you leave an Egg sitting, the spores will get in and the mold will form. Fire it up, let it run hot for a while and that will get most of the mold. Whatever you do, don't use chemicals. The ceramic is porous.[p]TNW

Crumpled newspaper works well way to wipe down the insides of a cooker.

  • The Naked Whiz,
Hehehe, I figured that it cleaned itself during the last usage before winter. That's why I was suprised to find so MUCH mold. Coincidentally it was stored oustide. That a bad idea?[p]Thanks for the answers all :)
