I know this is an old subject, but I would like to know the difference between boston, should and picnic for pulled pork. Which should I use, and what is the advantages of one over the other?

TheBear, when you stick the boston butt and the picnic together they make a shoulder. For most folks, the whole shoulder is hard to find. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that most people use the boston butt for pulled pork. Often you can find the picnic at a lower price but you have to deal with a couple extra bones and that skin that most still have on them. The Boston butt has one single blade bone which can be used as a test for doneness when you are cooking.[p]Rick

TheBear,[p]I've always used Boston butt with eggsellent results. Some here swear by the shoulder, which I intend to try sometime.[p]Woody54

    TheBear,
Shoulder is the only this this family will eat. Claims of "less fat" and "better flavor" are the two most common things I hear. I cook them with the skin on and the bone in which I think adds something to the cook time and the flavor. Haven't done a butt in 2 - 3 years.
