Lump

I read a post some time ago about segregating the lump by size prior to use. Should this always be done?[p]Is the small lump (i.e. able to fit through the grates) thrown away prior to use or put into the egg with larger pieces (for fuel, thinking they wouldn't all make thier way to the bottom and clog the grate)?[p]Thanks, for the help!!![p]By the way, XL egg and I love it.

  • Chester,
Some folks feel you should sort lump, some feel you should dump it in straight from the bag. I fall somewhere in the middle. If you dump most brands of lump in straight from the bag, when you get to the bottom of the bag, you will have all small stuff which will inhibit airflow and cause you difficulties. However, you probably don't have to get really picky about sorting and building your fire. See what works best for you. However, do try to avoid the small chips and dust at the bottom of the bag.[p]TNW

  • Hey Chester,
I store my lump in two plastic containers in my table. I segregate the lump by "large pieces" and "the rest". I do this as a matter of convenience when I need some larger pieces. (I got tired of fishing around in the bag up past the elbow) I toss the small chips but will usually pile the smaller pieces (quarter sized) on top of the lump as it gets burning. For long cooks, I will use the larger and medium pieces.
It works well for me... I can open 3-4 10lb. bags and fill my two containers.
Lump is like Cracker Jacks... theres always a surprise hidden inside! :>)

here is a pix of my simple wooden frame with a 3/4" hardware cloth bottom. Next time I make one - if I ever get that bothered - I'll probably step up to 1".
Anyway when I get down to the last fourth or so of the bag I dump it and shift the little stuff out and then pour it back in the bag or my favorite delivery bucket shown here - a coal bucket.

RRP, If you ever get to 1 inch "living large" send me your
old screen. Course most times I'm cooking with sand size particles and would need to get used to larger lump. When I get to bottom of lump bag I roll it up tight and put it into wood stove.

  • RRP,
I've been using some s american lump. Last bag had some pieces that were bigger than my head another bag had large pieces but was mostly powder.
