3 chickens - can I spatchcock and fit on large? Direct or Indirect?
Hmmm, well the subject line pretty much summarizes my questions. I have a Costco three pack of chickens that would normally get beer canned. I have been wanting to try a spackcock for some time, but really want to cook all three. (I need the extra chicken for pizza, burritos and pasta this week) Can I fit all three on the grill? I think if I spach two and spach and sever the third in half it might fit. Has anyone tried this? [p]Direct or indirect? The whiz says direct, so right now, that's the way I am going. Just wondering the pros and cons of indirect. Anyine tried? I figgured I made such a mess of my plate setter yesterday with the ribs, I could mess it up some more today.[p]Thanks,[p]By the way, here's a great, and easy chicken taco/burrito filling.
Take a couple/few jalapenos deveined and cut in thin lengthwise strips. Chop a small white onion. saute in 3 tbs of chicken fat for 1 minute. don't brown. Add 1-1/2 cups of chopped tomatos. Cook 3 minutes more. Add a couple cups of shredded chicken and salt to taste. Cook until almost dry - about 8 minutes. [p]Ed

Ed in TX,[p]The large can easily do 4 butterflied chickens at once. Place the so the feet face toward the outside of the egg and the head ends face each other.[p]Cooking direct vs indirect will reqiure more time or more heat for the indirect method as having direct access to the coals does cook the meal on both sides at once.[p]Cooking direct is fine and will be very good.[p]Spin

Ed in TX,
Three spatched direct at the same time.....that means a ton of grease smoke. I'm going indirect these days, tired of burning grease all over the lump and inside the egg. With my platesetter I line a pizza pan with foil and use it as the drip pan. It's elevated with three small pieces of half firebrick so the drippings don't burn off. Anyhow, it's a personal preference how much grease smoke someone likes- some of my best chicken has been direct. But with three whole chicks direct, ya know the egg is going to have the neighbors wondering if your garage is on fire.
Good luck!
