Jwirlwind,
No I haven't tried smoking them. However I've tried them many different ways; all in a can. Please let me know your results.

Jwirlwind,
I haven't smoked any, but I have grilled them - after cleaning, brushed with olive oil and lemon juice. They were very fragile, but delicious.[p]Ken

Jwirlwind,
As a lid I seem to remember them being both hot and cold smoked. They (the old timers and few adults int he neighborhood) hot smoked something we called Buckies which were larger herring that swam from the salt water up to the fresh water streams and into the local lakes. They were hot smoked. Sardines being fairly small and delicate were gutted and with a small maple branchh stuck through their eyes as a hanger, were cold smoked. I can give you some more details on the smoking set up but it is a little more labor intensive than I think you may be looking for.
