GREAT way to start a charcoal fire

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
After reading a post a couple of days ago on Garry Howard's list about one of the list members starting his chimney starter with a Cajun cooker, I thought of something. I have a small "camp burner" that I found in my storage shed that is made to hold a skillet. It screws on to one of those 16.4oz. green disposable, propane canisters, and the canister sets on a base. I hooked it up, filled the chimney starter with charcoal, and set it on the burner...to my surprise, the chimney starter fit on the burner. Lit the little burner and turned it on medium high and just let it burn for 2 minutes. It started the charcoal, and in a few minutes I was cooking on my charcoal grill. If one was in a real hurry, they could leave the chimney starter on the burner for a few minutes more and have a ready to go fire in no time. This is a great idea.
The facts: The burner I have is 7 1/2 inches measured opposite corners, and is square. The chimney starter is 6 1/2 inches across the bottom and is round. Needless to say, the chimney starter fits on the little burner. Don't think the burner could be more than about 5 to 8 thousand BTU's...don't remember, for I've had it for several years. Bought it in the camping section of Walmart here in Carlsbad. Even though starting the chimney with newspaper works, and is a great idea, this is soooo much simpler, easier, faster, and lets you get down to doing what you want to do...Q'ing in short order. The little burner is small, and so is the propane canister, and one could carry it with them anywhere with little effort. Plus, God only knows how many times you could start your fire with this simple, economical outfit, before the propane canister is exhausted. I love this. Give it a try. [p]Happy Q'ing to you all,
Danny

    Danny G.,
Thanks for the tip. Is that for briquettes???
A small piece of firestarter (size of a marble) is as much as you need to start a good fire with lump charcoal and an egg.[p]Cheers

Please excuse me, Danny G. - I've been away for a while & can't seem to make sense of your thread. [p]Here, in our part of Middle America, we either use gas OR charcoal. I enjoy the few minutes that it takes the charcoal to get up to temp:
Time to decide who gets to cook....
Time for the wine to breathe.....
Time for the dogs to eat (so they're not hungry when we eat).
Time to notice just what season it is today . (Tomorrow may be different).
Time to not be in or out of control....
Time to notice if (or whenever) it's off-season for hummingbirds, monarh butterflies, skunks & mongrel dogs, deer & mother-in-kaws....
    & Time to be myself.[p]Bone appétit! JCA[p]
