Is there a proper way to rub a butt?
I am secure enough in my masculinity to ask that question! LOL. Seriously, when you are rubbing up your Boston Butts do you use Mustard or Olive Oil to adhere the rub to the butt? Or is there some other techniques out there. I am very happy with the consistency I am getting in my Butts these days, the only thing I could improve on is the bark.

ChoppedPorkPlate,[p]I tend to use dry rubs without an oil or mustard. I will apply serveral coatings. In between each I wrap the BB in pastic and put in the refrig. I tend to do this 24 hours before. The rub soaks in and forms a great crust.[p]

ChoppedPorkPlate,
I've usually done it the way Paul mentioned and had pretty good bark. Last time around, I tried mustard for the first time. I liked the results. You can get a lot better application of rub in a shorter period of time with less work using mustard.

ChoppedPorkPlate,
it's all just a matter of preference I think. Personally I use a Misto with bottled water in it. That sprays a fine mist to wet the butt so the rub adheres better. I then wrap in Saran Wrap and refrigerate for 24 hrs. Then unwrap, smear on plain-jane French yellow mustard and hit with several grinds of fresh pepper and a tad more rub. Works for me anyway and yields a nice bark!

I did one last night, Dizzy Pig course rub massaged in, a good coat of mustard and then a light coat of more Dizzy Pig, straight on the egg. it was good enough that it is all gone and the office Christmas luncheon will now be more pulled pork!
