Dome Temp. vs. Grill Temp

I've noticed over the past few weeks on slow cooks that I have a 20 to 30 degree temp. difference between my dome temperature and my grill temp (via probe attached to grill). Is this large a difference too great or am I in need of a recalibration? If it is normal which temperature do I need to follow and manage when I'm doing the long slow cooks?
