OT Ford F150 Question

As the title says, I have a question regarding my 2020 F-150, and everyone here is usually more knowledgeable than anyone I know.  My truck has 80k miles on it and back in November, I had to have the cam phasers replaced which was covered under my extended warranty.   Well fast forward to last week, my engine started making the same noise as it did with the phaser issue and the check engine light came back on like it had previously done.   So I took it to my Ford dealership and had them look at it, thinking it was probably the same thing.  It was mentioned by the service dept. the last time that it was there, that if the phaser repair didn't work, they would probably have to replace the engine.  (being covered under the warranty).  Well they ran the diagnostics on it yesterday and said that a PCM program needed to be ran and that I was 4 quarts low on oil.  I have no evidence of an oil leak of any kind at work or at the house where I park.  The tech said that the PCM would fix the excessive oil consumption.  (I am not a car guy, but that doesn't make sense to me)  They called me today that it was done and looks like everything is fine and I am good to go.  I am asking for any thoughts on this because as luck, or murphy's law, would have it, the extended warranty expired yesterday.  Would you fix it, then sell the truck or buy another extended warranty?  In my mind, I am afraid to dump more money into an engine that seems like it is starting to give me issues.  Thanks for the input as always.

    How could your truck be low a gallon of oil? Low oil light never came on? What engine is in it?

    The engine and emission control on newer engines is incredibly complicated and intricate. Issues with the calibrations could actually cause oil consumption especially related to the fuel/cylinder shutoff timing.

    First thing I would do is check oil more regularly.  Some people have had oil consumption issues from brand new on Fords.

    Second, make sure the issue is documented that you brought it in for repair before the warranty expired.  If it doesn’t fix it I would bring it back and say it is still bad and needs to be fixed under the warranty.

    Third, I would get an extended warranty again or off the truck and get a different one.  Engine replacements are not cheap and not sure, but they may blame an engine issue on it having had low oil before so they won’t cover it.

    I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

    If you had work done before and it didn’t fix the issue, you should still be covered under that previous warranty, right?

    i would sell it too. the oil is going out your exhaust, clogging the cats, maybe over heating the engine as well. those catalytics can get red, start fires on the side of the road, burn out the valves etc.  and what kind of damage has already been done

  • How could your truck be low a gallon of oil? Low oil light never came on? What engine is in it?
    My thoughts exactly.  It's the 5.0 V-8.  I am leaning towards getting rid of it.  An extended warranty on a used vehicle is pretty crazy $$.  No the light never came on or anything, as well as no sign of oil where I park.

    I’d ask for a, well documented, oil consumption test over 3k miles. I’d even hit up FOMOCO and argue the long block needs replaced.

    I’d ask for a, well documented, oil consumption test over 3k miles. I’d even hit up FOMOCO and argue the long block needs replaced. 
    It’s true that the Coyote sucks oil into the intake. I put an oil separator on my 2011 Mustang GT to keep that at bay. Would change the oil at least every 5000km, but never got more than a teaspoon or two of oil from the separator.

    It’s also the reason why we run accumulators on the dragster. 5 seconds of WFO at 10k RPMs to idle the vacuum within the engine will suck all the oil out of the pan. The accumulators replace that volume then it all balances itself back out.

    If you really were driving around with 2 quarts of oil in a 6 quart system I wouldn’t let the next guy test drive it!

    My statement was about the replacement, not the current truck. Turbos and damage associated with them are a common replacement/repair problem between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. You can find associated videos and articles fairly easily.

    I guess I’ve never heard that, in general turbos are on every diesel engine on the road and I don’t think they are having problems every 60,000 miles. Most the big rigs on the road have between 500k and a million miles on them. Most of my farm equipment have turbos.  If you are speaking specifically to gasoline engines with turbos I have friends and family with turbo f150s, Raptors, they have never had turbo issues. We had a BMW with a turbo, I had to replace the waste gate solenoid so I guess that’s a turbo issue but it was like $100 and took 30 minutes. I can’t think of anything on a modern vehicle that is most likely going to give you problems at 60-100k

    I had a V8 5.0 2020 F150.  One of my oil changes the tech said it was almost empty on oil- I thought the same thing- no warning, it wasnt near schedule mileage.

    After that I dropped mileage down for changes, but I should check the oil more often.
