OT-Operation BBQ Relief is in Texas-OT

On July 4th, catastrophic flooding tore through the Texas Hill Country, taking more than 100 lives — including 30 children. Over 160 people are still unaccounted for, and search teams from the Texas National Guard, Coast Guard, and local first responders continue working around the clock.

In the face of such heartbreak, your support meant we could do what we do best: show up fast, serve BBQ, and remind people they’re not alone.

Since day one, we’ve been in Kerrville — serving meals to families who’ve lost everything and to the heroes doing everything they can to help.

Because every plate says what words sometimes can’t: we’re with you.

When disasters like these strike, we’re reminded how precious life is, and how much it means to have a community that shows up. Every one of you is a blessing to this mission. Thank you for standing with us, and please, stay safe out there.

Gratefully,
Stan Hays

Hey, Buddy - I was wondering why your post never got any air under it's wings. But I went ahead and got started donating - even to the point that I had entered my credit card number and then suddenly it hit me...that link is not secured! Within seconds my card info could be long gone. Sorry - I meant well, but hanging my info out like an apple to be plucked by anyone just doesn't float my boat! Do you or someone have the secure link?

@RRP -  that came from OBR and it's all I can find.  I donated (and have for many years w/o compromise) so I guess I'm lucky or it is secure in the background which is the likely case. Hope! Hope!

it may well be secure in the background, but you are still vulnerable to man-in-the-middle or other snooping attacks between your computer and their web server.

Why are you considering the Operation BBQ site less secure than other sites that use HTTPS?  I fully understand that certificates do not guarantee data in transit is secure, but why is this less so?

if it's https with a cert then it should be fine - I took it from the post above that it was not https and was only http with no cert.  Maybe down the payment pipe of the process something switches to http, but that would be a bad thing (tm).

The concern is that when you hit the link to donate, at least in my case, the https: is not visible-scroll left in the site address box and it is there.  So, grab those CC's and have at it.

wrt to OBR, I have donated for years, without any issues. Multiple donations submitted annually, when I match y'alls purchases of  caliprince's Scouts popcorn sales.

Online security is not a trifling matter, so consider a "burner" credit card with a lower limit, meant only for online purchases. Mitigates your risk, to a degree.

Bump for more visibility on Saturday-a day when credit cards are more easily used.

side note - also worth taking a look at upcoming events around the country. encourages people to be background checked ahead of disaster and ready to roll. for example Cap there’s a volunteer opportunity event in Louisville in early August. thanks for the post

Thanks @Buckwoody Egger .  It was a challenge to find any information regarding the event here next month.  Mission accomplished.

i have noticed that i have to sign in / login to the app for the upcoming events to be “clickable”. then clicking “apply” lets you see the info before actually applying to volunteer at the events.
