which gasket method to use.

I have an XL with damaged original gaskets. I also have a set of RRP gasket material I got about a year or so ago.  I have seen recommendation for 1- no gasket.  2-1RRP gasket on top only.  3-one RRP gasket on bottom only.    which method should I use?   and what is best way to remove old gasket material.   and any other suggestions??

I just received a shipment from @RRP for my XL and asked him the same question. He thought the bottom gasket is better so your BBQ tools are less likely to damage the lip of the lower half of the egg. I am going with his advice because I’m notorious for slamming around my tools… once I find time to grind off the old gaskets.

I opt for top gasket. I'm sloppy and drag things and drip things, and my gasket gets all nasty.

@GoldenQ - if you still have the instruction sheet you received along with the Rutland then read the part where I suggest you use a 3M or knock off brand Rust and Paint Remover. It is a real coarse looking item that chucks into a 1/4" drill and makes real quick work of cleaning off the old gasket as well as any residual adhesive, yet will not damage your ceramic edge one bit.

    I don’t use gaskets anymore.

I’m so frustrated with them I’m about to go back to this method. The problem isn’t the rrp gasket - it’s great. It’s the ADHESIVE. I keep burning it off.

I need a higher temp adhesive.

So much so - I’ve considered adding the gasket to the OUTSIDE rind of the lid. So it sort of “lips over” the bottom when I close the top.

I understand what you are describing but I see no reason why that would solve the problem.  Permatex sells a product called "red" but it is only rated at 50º higher than "gold". There must be some reason your application is failing. I'll be glad to take this discussion off the forum so maybe I can help you.

I followed @RRP instructions and put mine on the bottom. One of the best things I've done, much better gasket.
