XL BGE Corner Modular Nest

I recently acquired a BGE brand corner modular nest for my XL. I have it assembled but the assembly instructions do not mention/illustrate how to get the egg into the nest. I took the egg apart to remove it from my old wood table. The top piece for the corner nest just sits on the nest held up by some flange metal material that's welded into the nest frame. When I go to try to slide the top piece over the egg it doesn't fit down over it. It's hanging up on the raised band just below the edge where the bands for the lid sit. I did try to force it a bit but I do NOT want to force it anymore for fear of cracking the base. That's what made sense to me when placing the base into the nest - put the base in, put top of nest table over the egg and then reassemble the egg. I purchased the egg in 2016. I would assume they've kept the same molds for the eggs and it's the same dimensions as current XL egg bases. I've looked on the BGE website, YT, etc. for any info on how to get the egg into the base. The only thing I can think of is the top needs to be in the nest prior to lowering the egg base into it. If that's the case, it's going to be a pain in the rear. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone had some experience or any other idea. Pics? I still can’t believe they get $600 for $29 worth of tin.

I've never seen them, but would have assumed you have to drop the egg in.

from the catalog pics at the link provided, it definitely appears that the diameter of the opening is less than the max diameter of both L and XL. so if that’s true the table top has to be on when dropping in. confirm with measurements.
taking the tabletop off is not typically an option for homemade wooden tables. so my guess is it’s it’s not a common question and worth noting.
full disassembly for the xl is a good idea due to weight. for the L, i have kept the lid attached but emptied firebowl. the potlifter tool has always helped me manage the weight.
