I've had an XL for 10 years and it's always been more than enough for our family of five and more.  The one thing I couldn't do was cook at two temps with one egg.

If I was in your position, I think I'd lean toward two larges. I know that's not the question, but sharing accessories, cheaper, I think that's the ticket, unless you want to cook on just one at a time.

I am in agreement with that as well. I have two larges, and I have never regretted getting a second large versus an XL.

I'll probably get a few dislikes for this, but I bought a weber summit kamado to complement my large.  I use my large BGE about twice as much as the WSK and when I have both going I'm usually smoking on the BGE and grilling on the WSK.

edit: I really like having a 24 inch grate that I can do two zone grilling on. I used to use a 22 inch kettle for grilling because its just more space vs the 18 inch large BGE but since buying the WSK  I think I've cooked on my 22 inch kettle twice in 30 months. T
