Help me get my egg back to working condition

Large egg with the rutland gasket. I bought the new bands a year or so ago but I've never been able to pass the dollar bill test and I got frustrated so the egg has been sitting unused. My neighbor is having a rib competition this Sunday and I'd love to submit an entry, please help!

Is there a definitive way to get the new style bands to work well with the rutland? THANKS!

Note, I don't think the rutland is the specific cause of my problems, I'm really just looking for a foolproof way to get my egg back.

There’s no need to pass the dollar bill test. You can cook on it just fine.

Regarding the band, loosen the top band bolt so that the dome rests on the base. Tighten up while pressing down on the dome to keep it from moving.

You might have a high spot with the Permatex that is causing the air leak.

Again, don’t get frustrated about it. My medium has leaked air for years (no gasket)  and it hasn’t been a bona fide issue. I haven’t felt like putting forth any effort to fix it.

The only input I have in this regard is that when I changed out my bands on my large, I removed all the old hardware, cleaned everything and followed the instructions on the installation for the new bands and she is now as tight as a clam. Good luck and bring home the gold in the rib competition 😋

the new band on my 20 something year old egg doesnt work out too well. theres close to a 3/8th inch gap in the back even after moving the bands around. theres also a bge disclaimer that says it will not fit properly with eggs over a certain age.  i roll up tinfoil into a loose rope and put it down on the gasket when i need a 250 degree cook or less.

I installed a beautiful rutland, top
off install and everything. Put the lid on 48 hours later and proceeded to blow the gasket out on the back. That was probably 6 years ago. You could stick @RRP wallet wad in the gap.
