Sorta OT - Ankarsrum mixer

Cooks Illustrated did a food mixer shootout this month, and the mighty KitchenAid was knocked off its throne!  It was also disappointing to read KA now states never to mix dough above Speed 2, turn the machine off and let it rest every two minutes, and to limit total use time to 6 minutes.  Say wha?!?

The new winner is a Swedish model called Ankarsrum (which was formerly known as Magic Mill and Electrolux, est 1940).  Pricey at $750, and the full kit with accessories is an eye-watering $1,400!  Attachments incl. pasta rollers, juicer, meat grinder, graters, beaters for cookie dough and eggs, even a blender.  There are videos on amazoid's posting, it's really an unusual design.
My KitchenAid is well over 30 years old and of the old, steel (heavy!) design, and I hope it outlasts me (although its KA blender sibling gave up the ghost this year).

I'm with you, Botch - I also bought my KA years ago and I see no reason it shouldn't out last my needs and time. Besides that I intend to leave it for the new owners in my handy-dandy swing out appliance lifter.

I have had one of those for about 20 years. Mine has an Electrolux label as that is who owned the company at that time. Same machine - the only thing that changes from time to time is the colors they offer.

There is a learning curve to best use it as it works differently than a Kitchen Aide type of mixer.

    A great, solid machine!

  • Our prior KA mixer crapped out while I was grinding a small amount of brisket a few years back. Wifey was displeased.

We replaced it with another KA five years or so back. No issues thus far.

Too bad, for sure! Since the old forum is gone I do recall  a long thread about that problem plus the reasons - mainly just crappy, cheap plastic gears being easily chewed thru by metal worm gears. BUT I also recall KA stood up and would pay for a fix. It was a nasty reputation killer!
  • I had a kitchen aid link that was an independent mixer fixer guy. It was like $200 including shipping and he did it all.

    Gotta find that link…
