Replacing bands and hinge on the egg
GrannyX4
Posts: 1,491
Between the years 2019 - 2022 I spent most of the time trying to keep MDSH alive. During that time I used the egg twice. In November 2022 he passed and I have not used the egg since. Well, now I need to crank it up and a brisket has been requested for thanksgiving. One BIG problem the bands and hinge are gone. Top won’t open or close. Very rusty. My ace hardware tells me it is simple to replace and they will give me instructions on how to do it. My question, is it really that simple?

Simple? yes. Only issue I had was initially getting the planes of my dome and base to seat properly. My egg is 23 years old and the bands are recommended for newer eggs but where there is a will there is a way! GO FOR IT and don't look back!

i might try spraying the hinge with a penetrating liquid first to see if you can unfreeze it. every couple days for a week before buying new. dont force it though

Sorry to hear of your loss.
If your old bands truly are shot, the new bands are relatively straightforward to install. Your Ace folks may even be able to install them for you. If not, I wonder if an Egghead in the Orlando area could offer a hand.

Many good suggestions ^^^, hope you get the issue resolved.
Sorry for your loss, I'm sure your MDSH (my dear sweet hubby?) will be watching your brisket cook from above and you'll do him proud.canuckland -

Wow, that was easy. Bands are on and brisket is ordered. Thank you all for giving me the confidence that I could do it. Grandson came over and was a big help in tightening all the bolts. Going to crank up the egg and get it back in working order.Every day is a bonus day and every meal is a banquet in Winter Springs, Fl !

Congrats on the replacement and even more for jumping right into the deep end of the pool with brisket. Obviously you have nailed the brisket cook before, thus the family request. You've got this and there are many here who will answer any brisket questions should you inquire. Way to go!
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
Oh my gosh! The brisket was the best I have ever cooked. The fellow at the meat market did an awesome job of trimming. It was all gone in less than 24 hours. It was served at Thanksgiving dinner, evening snack on biscuits, breakfast with eggs and again at lunch time for just grazing. Gone. Thanks again for your help. You all made one old woman very happy.Every day is a bonus day and every meal is a banquet in Winter Springs, Fl !

I missed this thread until today. It brought a smile to my face knowing your family had a great experience with the egg!
