In the middle of building a corner coffee station for my better half. I don’t drink coffee, but I love the smell and the ritual of making her coffee every morning. Anyhow, the base cabinet is made of cabinet grade Maple ply:

The top is about 1 1/2” thick Hickory (still roughed out, haven’t scribed and cut to size yet):

It will sit below these shelves I had made previously:

Still need to build the face frame and the door before final sanding and finishing.

Looking forward to seeing it finished! Already has the makings of a handsome piece.

But, if you love the smell, and ritual, of coffee in the morning, isn't this sorta for you :)

Never worked with hickory ('cept in the Egg).  That's gonna be beautiful with a finish on it!   B)

I was seen as quite the oddball being a Navy Chief who didn’t drink coffee, but it is my favorite aroma. I just don’t like the taste - don’t even like coffee ice cream. To answer your question, yes the cabinet is for me.

Looking good! As a wood butcher myself I like your project in progress!

Gotta ask you a question…I see that foil bag of Lean Beef Pup-Peroni off to the left. Is your second best friend a finicky snacker? My Westie would not eat even one piece of their “Prime Rib” and I gave it away. As I can no longer find his favorite Bacon flavor I chanced a small bag of “Real Beef” and he is eating that. I have to wonder if the “Lean Beef” might be better for him.

My GSD will eat just about any snack we give her. My wife’s 5 lb Cavapoo is a persnickety little turd and will only eat a very short list of snacks. They both eat the Pup-Peroni snacks in that bag.

    - Had to clear something up that could be taken the wrong way.
    - I agreed with your post about your dislike of coffee NOT about being an oddball.  Like yourself after 30 years in the Navy I took max grief for not being a coffee drinker (diet coke is a different story).
    - To make matters worse I have been married to a Colombian for 45 years and catch grief from the in-laws at every opportunity.
    - BTW I think your coffee station is going to be a work of art.  Sadly, I have -273° C skill in woodworking a gene I definitely did not inherit from my father who made some incredible pieces.
    - Looking forward to seeing the completed piece.

Same story here.  I was ordered to drink more fluids when I got dehydrated at boot camp, drank 7 glasses of coke for lunch and was sicker than a dog.  Its been water/iced tea for me since, (hot tea more recently).
Do love the smell of coffee, and some coffee-flavored ice creams I've had, but never liked coffee per se.

A few years ago a cubicle-mate and coffee nerd showed up at the office with a bag of coffee wherein a raccoon-sized rodent called a "civet" would eat the coffee "fruit", **** out the indigestable beans, natives would "find" those beans and they were sold at a premium, supposed to have a unique taste.  He offered me some and I drank half a cup, just to say I have.  Meh.  Someone said, "Hey, those natives actually have a worse job than we do!"  Some chuckles, but nobody really agreed with him.

Since it's Navy coffee true confession time; 27+ years primarily in the submarine service and never acquired the taste for coffee or any other hot drinks.  (May have enjoyed hot chocolate as a kid...).  Diet coke was the beverage of choice but the beverage mixing machines shipboard never made the cut.  Ice water all the way.
Nothing like heading out of Puget Sound, surface transiting in the winter with 25-30 kt winds and ice water.  Yep-no alertness issues.  At least we could leave that weather above at some point.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

That’s going to be a nice piece. Impressive cabinet construction. Since it’s probably going to be screwed to the wall, how will you attach that giant cross-grain top? Mounting it to the box is doable, but keeping a tight seam to the wall all year could be tough.

And, as a matter of fact, I hated coffee UNTIL I joined the navy. Like anything I guess, it grows on you, like mold.

To attach the top I am going to put a couple narrow slots running from front center to the back corner. Then put a couple screws with fender washers through said slots in to the top. This will allow across the grain movement with seasonal changes.

The corner is not exactly square so no matter what I do there is going to be a gap between the top and the wall, so I plan to plane some of the hickory down to about 1/2” thick and use it as a backsplash to cover the gap.

When I visited Bali last year we toured a coffee plantation, and they had a couple civets in a cage so that you could see what they looked like. My son and D-I-L tried the coffee and weren’t overly impressed.

I wonder if that started out as a joke among the locals?

It tastes better because it's stupid expensive.
