Upper gasket

I put a rutland gasket on my large a few years ago. I took the upper gasket off and didn’t replace it. Now my rutland has flattened and I want to see if an upper gasket will help seal it. The problem is without a gasket on it there is gunk all on it. I tried some acetone wipes but it just kinda smeared it. If I remember right I used some kind of stripper on a drill to clean it the first time. I’m wondering if I clean it down yo clean ceramic will I have taken to much off. Is there a better way to clean it. Thanks.

I used a pumice stone. Actually 4 of them on the dome.  I put my Rutland on the upper.

That stripper I recommend that you used was a 3M brand Paint and Rust Remover…but there are now many cheaper knock off brands on the market. It chucks into a 1/4” electric drill.

It will destroy that Rutland gasket so be careful if you do use it to clean that dome edge, but it does the trick easier, quicker and cheaper than using several pumice stones.

Reseat the dome in the bands. It probably just needs an adjustment

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • Thanks y’all. I may try reseating it first. Hasn’t been that long since I put the new band kit on it.

What I’m try to remove seems to be mostly grease and some soot I think. If I take it down to white ceramic do you think I’ll be removing to much. I sure don’t want to do that. Thanks.

  • The general rule with strippers is to not  use the same you used last year. I read that somewhere, OK, I wrote it down and then read it, but still ... sometimes the things I write down make the most sense of anybody.

No...4 months ago I cleaned up a dome similar to yours, but this one had a "gasketless" 15 year build up of baked on grease, soot and creosote. Yes, it took me about 30 minutes even with a beer break, but that 3M wheel worked wonders! Once again that 3M does NOT damage the ceramic edge...but since you might decide to go ahead and place a new gasket on that dome then those "peel and stick" gaskets mean you better get that edge pristine clean again for it to adhere!

I agree with "fish" EXCEPT since you said you have a new band then you might even want to just exchange that old Rutland altogether...but that would cost another whopping $11... B)

I was planning on taking tomorrow off. My sister Beulah has a butt warble the size of a cheeseburger, and it's my turn to stop poppa from trying to put his buns on it and eat it. He's been hovering around with his buns open for two days. He's a fool, the thing looks drier than a church fart and his buns have no condiments on it.
  • My point was that you might have to wait two days.

Well, I replaced the upper gasket. I used a 3m paint stripper and removed all the grime I could. I then took paper towel and acetone and removed what else I could. Replace the gasket and so far so good. Much better seal than what I had. The only leak was where the probe wire was between the top and bottom. Much better control of my temps. Guess only time will tell how long it will stick.

honestly - when the Rutland is applied following my directions then there is no need to put on a dome gasket. but whatthehelldoIknowafter21years>
  • For years I didn’t need one. The gasket I bought from you worked until it flattened out. I guess I could have bought another one, but found the other local.
