I have the PS Woo but I am quite sure if you have the AR you definitely do not need the PS Woo.  While I am sure Tom would like the business he also would not steer you down that road.  Given 'em a call to speak to the source.

As long as you have a round stone or pan to serve as your indirect piece to use on your Rig you are golden. The nice thing about using the Rig is you can use larger or smaller round pizza stones or pans to help increase or decrease your airflow as needed. Or use an oval stone for ribs.

  • I have a ps woo and it works for everything so far and was a fantastic purchase. Also got the spider (which I use with deflectors or the heavy duty sear grate) and the extender up top. I already had a large half grid and I like using it in the mix sometimes. My cooks are usually attended type cooks for meals so the foods move around as needed.  In summary, if you only have the woo, there’s plenty more to complement it. Amazing stuff to be honest and that’s why it has been copied by so many others.

The only thing I have seen with the AR, and have not ventured if there’s a way to use with the woo, is the oblong deflector that protects the rib tips better than a round deflector.  The AR gives you more levels almost like a food dehydrator or something but then you have to have a grid for every level.

never bought one of those platesetters, with the ar, spider, and small pizza stone to fit the spider down low, that setup does most anything. i do drop in a 13.5 inch paella pan on the lower rack if i need a little extra heat deflection by why mess with a platesetter if its really not needed

  • After re-reading I realize now that Mr Toad the OP has an AR and asked about a woo. I mistakenly though it was “have a woo do I need an AR”.  Apologies. I am not sure what the expander (getting higher into the dome) options the AR has but the woo has a nice one that fits the raised handles on the woo.

I had a ceramic plate setter I bought with my large egg.  I also bought a cast iron plate setter.  I used both for a while.

When BGE came out with something similar to the PSWoo with their Eggspander, I bit the bullet and bought an Adjustable Rig (with extension grate for the top) and a Spider, partially to support the originator of fancy egg support racks, as I would assume that the Eggspander affected CGS sales somewhat.

I haven't used either plate setter since getting the rig - it's a lot of stuff to store and move, but the options are fantastic.  The Woo, PSWoo, or BGE Eggspander are nice, but they are no comparison to the options available with the rig.  Really like the long stone's heat protection and side airflow.

I eventually cut my plate setter down to the size of a round stone, to use with my spider, in case I ever want to, but I don't think I've done that yet.  I mostly use the spider with a wok (also purchased from CGS).

On the XL's different geometry, an XL Woo works with both a plate setter and a stone, and the XL Adjustable Rig can optionally sit on top of the Woo.

I have no relation to them, other than being a customer/fan.
