Pork Butt On

I hope the brisket gods will forgive me for not cooking a brisket today but I didn’t have the chance to get one.

New rutland gasket was installed Friday. I still have smoke leakage from underneath the cap and some out the ass end. Is some leakage expected or should both be airtight?  I might need to align my dome a little. Thoughts on the cap?

Plainfield, IL.

My Rutland gasket install did not have any smoke leakage. There must be something going on with the top band adjustment. @RRP has a really good explanation of the gasket installation and the procedure to adjust the top.

I followed RRPs instructions and I had leakage issue there before the gasket install. I think it’s a dome alignment issue.

You say "cap" so I assume that is what you meant and not the dome. If so then some people place a piece of Rutland around the topmost throat (chimney). Write me if you want more info.

Since you said it was leaking before the Rutland and still is then that means, yes...rge planes of your base and dome are out of what! It is a simple fix of loosening both bands and then pressing your dome down firmly against the base and then re-tightening the bolts.

Thanks Ron, yes I was getting smoke rolling out from the underside of the cap/chimney. Even with my alignment issue the rutland was a Huge improvement over cooks with my older gasket.
