Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Why are some F1 races (like this one) run clockwise?

Yep.  Or put another way, they don't have to all run the same way.
In the UK many circuits are old airfields, being flat and having a nice big peri-track as well as at least one long straight.
Road races are less common here than in Europe, there's a few exceptions with the Isle of Man and one or two hillclimb circuits.
Naturally more circuits have been purpose built, I am not sure what comes first though - the direction or travel or circuit pattern.
In the glory days of ludicrous turbo engined cars running 'special' fuel, the cars got so fast that more turns and chicanes were installed.  Not unreasonable given that safety and materials were at least decade behind engines in terms of development.
Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay

Quite a qualifying session.  Here are the top ten positions on the grid:
Max Verstappen won pole position, with Fernando Alonso, Charles LeClerc, Esteban Ocon, and Carlos Sainz filling out the top five. Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and Lando Norris will be in positions 6 through 10 for the Monaco Grand Prix.

I got to spend a day walking the track last year, got some gambling in (brought home some ball markers for the putting green). Here was one of my favorite pics from that day - right smack next to the casino, every parking spot reserved with MY initials!

    Fun town!

… finally, the respect I deserve!

Typical Monaco race. Pole sitter rules as of now.  The rain has created a few challenges for the principals to manage but not much in the way of wheel-to-wheel racing.
