OT - Japanese etiquette question (Ramen)

Botch
Botch Posts: 16,460
There's plenty of ramen content on ewetube, but I can't find an answer to this particular question.
Many styles of Ramen include a "char-siu", which is a rolled, sometimes cured/seasoned, and slow-roasted pork belly, which is then sliced into disks and one disk placed atop a bowl.
How are you supposed to eat it?  It's too large for one bite like the meats in phó or chinese soups, you don't have a knife to cut it, it's not tender enough to tear, and lifting it with chopsticks to take a bite off it then dropping it back in the soup doesn't seem right (it's apparently improper to lift noodles up to your mouth and then bite them off, letting the rest drop back into the bowl).
Anyone?

Are you eating the ramen in Japan or the US?    Country dining manners supercede country of origin IMO.

Having said that I am from Texas and have offended Koreans while in Texas.

That's one of the videos I checked this morning, he didn't address the char-siu.
Loved his line, though, "the cute chick sitting next to you, she looks like sh*t too".

It's ok to bite your noodles, while still holding them with your chopsticks, and then to dip them back into the broth to continue slurping. It's bad form to just let the noodles drop back in the broth.
It's ok to bite a big hunk of whatever and then also dip it back into the broth, just don't bite a thing and let it drop from your mouth and splash into the broth.
However, I'm inclined to agree with @TechsasJim - if you're eating this at home eat it however you like.

Oh, disagree!  Slurping my noodles and drinking the broth directly from the bowl offends the white-bread locals, and is half the fun!

  • Put on a bib / napkin, enjoy yourself, be complementary, tip well and let anyone who objects kiss your grits.

I use chopsticks, pick it up and bite it.

Don't tell your problems to people.  80% of people don't care and 20% are glad you have them.

Botch you just made me choke on.a sip of bourbon.   Ha

That’s the exact reason I offended others, I wasn’t slurping.

Should I ever find myself in a Korean shipyard for work I’ll be certain to slurp without remorse.

While the Japanese are currently great allies , I stopped caring about them in  1941. Rum and Coke tonight.

Phew, offending the Caribbean with the rum.
They’re not a threat, in fact I’d rather be there than here nowadays.

What’s the rum out of curiosity?   I do enjoy a good dark rum (mainly via Dark and Stormies)

Kraken, black. The best there is. At the risk of hijacking Botch’s thread to the, What Are You Doing Now thread, this is my view from the garage.

I have some Kraken black but prefer Mount Gay or Gosling’s but as always, to each their own.
