Uncovered Eggs

Do any of you keep your eggs outside year around uncovered? I keep a cover on mine but it's aggravating sometimes putting and off. A couple of mine have wood handles but other than that I don't guess it hurts anything not to cover them.

I cover my Large and Small Egg combo table which was designed for that. My Medium has an old BGE cover which is now junk and will need to be replaced SOON!!! My Mini is safe inside my porch..

But otherwise yes a nice Spring cleaning MAY or MAY NOT happen! We will see!

Uncovered, unsheltered 24/7/365 since 2014.  Texas sun until 2019 and Colorado sun and snow since.
    Love you bro!

Cover the wood handles.  You are right, the sun and rain can’t hurt the ceramic (unless the rain is frozen)

    My thoughts.  Thanks
  • I uncovered my eggs once. Security at the Walmart was not impressed.

My current egg lives in the garage after every cook.  My original egg sat outside, in a custom table, uncovered for 6 years and was fine.  It froze shut a few times, so I would simply stick a lighter cube in the bottom vent and it would thaw quickly.  Otherwise, it was just fine sitting outside.

As far as covering them to keep them in good shape, too much of a hassle. On/Off—wait for eggs to cool etc. Life is short, I don’t have the patience. wood handles are easily replaced. Now, a covering for ME, and the eggs. I’m totally on board with. That is well worth it.

My large was uncovered for ~6 years but it didnt have a gasket anymore and it was fine.  I replaced the base and the dealer goofed and gave me the dome as well so I had a brand new gasket... held water non stop.

Now have an XL and same story- got a cover at xmas and wont go back to uncovered.

Now I say all that and I live in Central Texas and it never rains except when it does.  So really the affect is limited but I dont want to go back to slow heat ups to dry it out.

    Eggs sit outside uncovered here.

My Large Egg goes cowboy year round.  We get all four seasons here, temps below zero to over 100, rain/hail and snow/ice.  No weather issues with it uncovered in over 12 years except for a few freeze-ups.  Easy to unfreeze using method @Langner91 mentioned.
I did buy a BGE vented cover when Egg was purchased, used it less than one year.  With it condensation would collect on the Egg and worse, spiders decided it was a good home.

I used to keep my covered in a wooden table, and the rain rotted the table from the bottom up.  Now I have a stainless table and the egg remains uncovered.

I keep my eggs covered for a different reason:

drunk college kids have a reputation for stealing rocking chairs, American flags, bird feeders, lawn ornaments, etc on their way home from the corner bars up the street.

I use “non-logo” covers that don’t overtly advertise the BGE

One of my eggs is bike u-locked to a railing. As well.

probably paranoid overkill. And they’ll probably just break them trying to steal them, anyway.

Uncovered and unprotected for 8 years now in MI.  The handle needs to be replaced. I have a warranty base to put in so I bought a new nest, bands, Rutland, etc.

PSA - if you have the ceramic cap or DFMT under the cover, be careful when you pull off the cover.

I don’t have to worry about too many college kids near me, but I keep my second MiniMax on the front porch and turn the BGE logo my cover towards the house to keep any prying eyes off my Egg.

This year I moved all the grills under my covered patio uncovered. The rains were soaking through all of the covers and trapping the moisture in.

After the rains stop I use beach towels to keep tree and bird droppings off. I bought four matching at Costco on sale. The genesis 1000 has a bikini top.

It’s all been uncovered since day 1 (8 years ago). Never had an issue with the Indiana weather.

  • When I bought my XL my dealer threw in a cover and I bought covers for my other two Eggs.  I seem to almost always have one uncovered from the last cook, but I guess I think covering some of the time is better than none at all.  My XL, which gets used the least, is always covered and it looks pretty much perfect compared to my others.

I've always wheeled my eggs back into the sealed back porch once cool, and I have to replace the wooden handle anyway; so there's that.

I always cover them. Except for this mini last night. Snow melt from unguttered section slowly turned into a freeze.
