Dome Alignment and Dollar Bill Test

Hello all. So I recently replaced my gasket and my band on my egg. I have been fiddling with them off and on over the past few days and taking breaks as my frustration builds. At this point I’m probably 5-6+ hours in of fiddling and so far I can either get proper dome alignment with no underbite/overbite along with a poor seal at a few different positions. Or I can get a great deal with about a 1/4” under/overbite. It’s an XL and I’m not sure if having a poor seal in those few spots is a deal breaker. I can’t see a visible gap but a dollar bill pulls fairly easily through those spots. Any advice appreciated!

I have a LBGE but independent of the size rig, I would default to the good seal.  As you well know, the BGE runs on air flow and you think you control it thru the lower vent and whatever the former DFMT is called.

With the gap(s) you can manage the system introduced air flow by reducing the vent settings but if the introduced air flow is high, then maintaining L&S  cook temps could be a challenge.
Shutdown could be a whole 'nother story.  But just an opinion and we all know what those are worth...

1/4”? No offense meant, but a BGE is not fine China! Your dome and base were not  made as one piece and then cut apart!  They were  made in separate molds and often days apart! Please send me a PM on this forum unless you know my email address.
  • @RRP that’s what I was thinking. But after reading some posts of people who had perfect alignment and good deal I kept trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I sent you an email.
@lousubcap thank you! I was on the same thought process but wanted to make sure before I went that route.

As mentioned above, sweat about the seal if you must, but don't worry about 1/4" under/overbite. Your sanity is worth far more.

Paul - thanks for the pictures you sent me and I hope you understand my reply I sent you about my observations. After 21 years of providing this service I have some pretty good clues!  =)
