Kisk Ash Basket - Leave Grate in or Out

Hi its me again.  New to my XL Big Green Egg.  I am an experienced egger of 25 years.  For my new XL large, i just got a Kick Ash Basket and Stainless Steal Can.  Question.  Keep the BIG GREEN EGG GRATE? Or REMOVE IT?  What are the pros and cons of each method.  Faster, slower cooks.  Uneven heat temps?  Keep Grate on for long slow cooks?  Remove for high temp cooks?  Any advice is appreciated!

Leave it out and NEVER look back! Multiple years of eggperience speaking!
  • I have a large BGE and I leave my grate in, but I really don't think it matters and you'll probably get plenty of people on both sides of this one. I would rather have some of the small pieces that slip through the KAB rest on the grate so I can reuse. It still allows for plenty of air flow.

This is another XL question where the answer could be different because of the larger span of the KA Basket.
The earlier version of all the baskets were made from a small diameter material. KA recommended, on the XL, to keep the factory grate in place. Because they now use a thicker gauge, I believe they now state it’s ok to run commando with only the KA Basket in place. Some of the advantages of the KA are lost with factory grate in place.
Send them a quick email and ask them. They are excellent and very responsive.

From heat perspective, leave the grate in.  Air will still flow.  However the thickness will dissipate heat away from the bottom of the base.  It will also keep a fire out of the base should embers fall thru.   That in turn keeps the heat off suface below aka granite

on low and slow bbq cooks in xl and large grills, I prefer to leave the lump grate in under the basket, provides better control of the burn. t

i took mine out on my previous L and now on the XL.  The ease to pull it all out and clean out the ash  would be lost with it in.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

Try it both ways. On my Medium, I found that it performs better with it in. But that's not an XL.
