Being above a source of heat and potentially under full sun also limits options.Bluetooth and WiFi both use the same frequency band 2.4ghz. The difference is, as you said, power consumption, which in turn equates to power output and battery life. One of the Bluetooth classes/specs allows for range of up to about 1000 feet.
