I want to get a Temp control unit for my Large BGE. So, all things considered, which one should I go with? i'm pretty new to Ceramic cookers so I'm still figuring things out with it. I've been a smoker for a lot of years, but mainly offsets and Weber Smokey Mountains before I went Traeger. I'm looking to get back to real smoke and wood flavor.
I'd like to know the pluses and minuses between any of the temp controllers.
Thanks ahead,
John

Unless you find someone that has used both, you'll likely find comments like I have this and it works great..current: | Large BGE | Genesis 1000 | Genesis E330 | 22 inch Kettle | Weber Summit Kamado
sold:| PitBoss pro 820 | WSM 22 | -
I have thermoworks smoke X4 with billows. It works great.

Many others will say this... Play with the egg for some time, then see what your needs are re: accessories, temp controller, etc.
My $0.02 are that anything Bluetooth sux. Popular controllers used by others here are FlameBoss, Smobot, Thermoworks Smoke, and and a few folks with the FireBoard. I'm sure I missed some other ones.
Stoker and BBQ Guru had their heyday, but don't seem to be that popular these days.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
Egg Genius is a specific model made by Flame Boss for BGE. I prefer the Flame Boss 500 because it also has a control box that sits next to Egg to display info and make adjustments instead of only depending on a smart phone or tablet.
BBQ Guru is a company, like Flame Boss that makes multiple models. So it kind of depends on what model of Guru you want to compare.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
EggGenius is a green FB400. For that money, just get the 500.

I remembered this thread from some time ago. Much (most?) of it is still relevant.

@danhoo I have owned both, genius is FB 400. It lacks a physical screen so you have to use your phone to check temps. I prefer the Flame Boss 500. I have 2 and I am very happy with their performance. The history file with notes in the app are a game changer.Southeast Louisiana
