Mold Question

I've had a kamado joe classic for years that sat on my patio with their cover on it and a cast iron damper on top.  I never had any issues with rust or mold.  I had to replace the base and dome and decided to build it into a table while I was replacing.  I changed out the cast iron damper with a smokeware cap and have not put a cover back on it.  Now I am having issues with mold.  I'm trying to figure out if it's just related to not having a cover or if it;s the new base/dome that's not sealed as tight as the old on.  The gasket is tight enough that the fire goes out but I get smoke rolling out of the back a little when it's in use.  I tried leaving the smokeware cap slightly open and the bottom vent slightly open to get some air.  The first time I opened it after install I had a ton of moisture inside.  Now the moisture is gone but the mold is still building again.
Anybody leaving their egg outside, uncovered with a smokeware cap?  Any idea how to get rid of the mold issue?  Obviously a hot fire cleaned it up but I'm looking for prevention and not just clean up.   It's a custom table I built with a kamado joe on the left and a rec teq 700 on the right.  I can have a custom cover made but was trying to avoid that.  I haven't had any issues with the rec teq.  Thoughts?

Wonder if there is mold somewhere close by? Mold spores travelling in air and getting in?

How long and how hot did you run it to kill the mold?

Maybe it needs longer to cook it out?

    Clean burn.
    South of Columbus, Ohio.

  • I’ll ran it about 500 for 45 minutes. I’ll run longer and hotter this time to make sure it’s gone. I also snuffed it out so I’ll probably let it burn all the way out this time.
More interested in future prevention. Do I need a cover?  It had been pretty wet and very humid this summer.

I have a medium bge and a primo oval xl as seen in my display pic. I’ve had mold issues with my bge and I have the smoke ware cap on top also. I just recently started covering them like last week and never had mold. I used to open the bottom and top vent a little but now I leave both vents open fully, No more mold and I even leave charcoal in there.

With my bge the smoke ware cap won’t fit with the cover I bought so I just take off the top cap and put it in the bbq.

I actually just checked if I had mold in my kamados because I recently bought these covers and was afraid of mold since I’m restricting the airflow while not in use a lot but both are mold free right now :)

  • Mold need organic material and moisture and the dark space is ideal growing conditions. I open my egg to allow light and fresh air in every week if I think about it. Open the vents to allow some air flow can help too. If it does grow then it will be burned off so its not a big deal.

  • It’s not your Smokeware cap, guys.  This happens with my XL occasionally and has happened with the cover and without.  You simply need  to use the grill more!

Not the smoke ware cap it’s because the vents aren’t open all the way.

This.  The only time I get mold is when I don’t use the large and it’s all greasy on the grid and left over lump.
  • Yeah I can see lack of use as an issue. Work has been crazy busy and the pellet smoker is so much more convenient at the end of a busy day.
