Revamping a green egg

Just bought a second hand large green egg. It was a great price . However it looked as though it has not been used in a long time , and left outside . A small amount of rust on the cast iron vented Chimney. The grate at the bottom of the fire basket seems to have rust on it too. The wooden handle feels slightly loose but I am sure that’s not a big deal to tighten up. There are no cracks and I do plan to replace the gasket. I came on here to ask what you guys would do to restore this egg. I’m looking at is as almost a little project to get it back to looking nice and fresh.
any suggestions?

I would put a new gasket on it and fire it up! Put some veg. oil on that daisy wheel and that rust will disappear with some good greasy smoke!
As for the rust on the fasteners, if that really bothers you, buy a new set of bands. The new ones are nice and everything will look like new.

dont see a fire ring but would get an adjustable rig for it and fire it up. it may hold temp without replacing the gasket.

I forgot to mention that the rusty grate is no big deal. No one sees it. Food doesn't touch it.
Or, get rid of it and buy a KickAshBasket.
It just needs some love and will give years of enjoyment!Clinton, Iowa -
Snug up the band bolt nuts and once again after a higher heat cook. You could clean up or replace any hardware that is rusted if you're worried about the look. The daisy wheel just needs to be reseasoned. I wouldn't worry about the fire grate. Mines rusted and cracked in pieces. I'd throw a Rutland gasket on it and you'll be in good shape!"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

^^^ I forgot to mention when you tighten the band nuts you should tighten them untill the bolt starts to bend. They need to be locked down hard or you'll risk the chance of the dome falling out in the future. The bolt nuts should be checked every change of the seasons for good measure or more frequently if you find yourself doing high heat cooks often."The pig is an amazing animal. Do a burn out before replacing gaskets or get Rutlands.

Just wipe it off and start cooking on it.

But definitely check/tighten the upper and lower band bolts.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
