18 Months Eggin’

Been Egging now for 18 months 4x a week on average, year-round in Chicagoland. Though I had considerable outdoor-cooking mileage, getting to know the Egg was quite literally baptism by fire. I quickly adopted the “Anything you can put in the oven, you can put in the Egg” mentality and have been having a blast from the jump. From turkey roulade to cheesecake, I’ve had all sorts of fun cooks. Also make it a nightly mission to watch one YouTuber for new ideas. From both an entertainment and technique/recipe standpoint, I particularly enjoy Malcom Reed (How to BBQ Right), Matt Pittman (Meat Church), Chef Tom (All Things BBQ), BBQ Pit Boys and Ray Lampe (Dr. BBQ). I’ve seen a bunch of others, but find myself coming back to these guys. Who are some of your favorites? Appreciate the forum. I don’t post often, but check in regularly.

Sounds like you are on a good path, Tim.  I’m pretty agnostic with YouTube videos but I watch ones that I search for vs for new ideas.

The bearded butchers are great to. They really helped me understand the differences in the cuts of the meats. A buddy and I butchered a whole hog after watching their videos.

Was just at All Things BBQ store in Wichita KS.  They now have another building full of patio furniture and accessories!  Very cool, and we bought a large outdoor group.  Also stocked up on rubs and sauces! It’s always fun to stop and check out the grills & smokers (they own Yoder Smokers) in their showroom.

Welcome from an older egger here downstate in Dunlap, just North of Peoria. Glad that you have understood and embraced the “anything (also meaning adopting any favorite recipe) that you or yours used to cook or bake inside) can be done on your BGE!
  • I’m in the SW burbs so I give you credit to egg in January. You named some of my favorites (Malcom Reed, although he seems to be using his Trager more), Meat Church, etc. Saluki mentioned the bearded butchers. They have great videos and I’m also a fan of their rubs. Outdoor Home is a BGE dealer and they have some good cooking demos that they did to showcase the egg. I’ve adopted a couple of things from a Thanksgiving show they did. Not egg related but Binging with Babish is a regular watch.

I hear that. The new ideas are just a byproduct of watching recipe builds more than anything else. Lotta cool stuff happens along the way.

I’m west in Aurora and have outside cover, so that helps. And this past winter seemed more mild than last. Oh, well, we’re through it. I think …
