rEGGulator sticky top

My rEGGulator is getting very sticky and hard to open. I'm guessing its time to pull it off and scrub it down real good with soap and water. Since it is cast iron, that's not the best thing to do for the seasoning of it. Has anyone else come up with a great solution for this?

all the above OR just spray your daisy with EasyOff oven cleaner. That stuff makes a mess but cleans Miss Daisy quite well.

That’s a great no scrub way Ron. Spray them in a small plastic bag and sit it in the sun light for several hours. I like to use the jumbo ziplock bags for things like this and small cast iron pans. Rinse in cold water and repeat if necessary.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I’ll try them or at least one of them tomorrow.

The rEGGulator top is not a daisy wheel.  A lot of the advice here is great for a daisy wheel.  Oven cleaner, high temp burn off, and wire brush all work great on a daisy wheel.

The rEGGulator states on the website:

    • Made of durable cast iron with a proprietary super pre-seasoned finish for greater weather resistance
    • Silicone adjustment tab is cool to the touch throughout cook
Because of those two bullets, I wouldn't spray it with oven cleaner, I wouldn't wire brush it, and I wouldn't toss it in a high temp egg.

Mine is sticky, too.  I give it a wipe when it is hot and that seems to help.

The glue on the silicone tab will be attacked by oven cleaner.  The coating will get attacked by oven cleaner.  High temp will likely melt the glue holding the tab.

I would clean it more carefully, but I have nothing to back that up other than knowing it is different than the daisy wheel.

    Good luck!

So today I took a very fine sandpaper and cleaned the top rim. It has smoothed the operation. I'll be cooking again soon and see if that helps. It should re-season it during the next cook. There is quite a bit of build up in that top cap, to the point that the rEGGulator is securely glued to the top.

What do you not like about the rEGGulator? I bought mine that way and have not had the pleasure of using a daisy wheel.

@N10 basically the clearance is too tight so it sticks. If I grab it cold and try to adjust it takes two hands and a lot of force to get it open. The little rubber tab feels like it’s going to come off.  If I try to make adjustments while on the egg I have to hold it with one hand and whack it with my other so it doesn’t spin on the top. With the rubber you can’t put it inside the grill when it’s hot.
Basically with the daisy you could make small adjustments with your finger tips, no fighting it at all, and it had enough tolerance to wiggle loose if it’s been sitting, never had a problem with it seizing up with gunk. I like the handle too for removing when it was hot.
I think the regulator is just cheaper to manufacture which is why they went in that direction.

I tried to loosen the phillips screw holding the top on but it’s seized on so I will probably have to soak it, heat it with a torch and get that screw out. Honestly I’m tired of fighting with it… I cannibalised my daisy for the smobot but I will probably retrofit the regulator for the smobot and get the daisy back operational.

Glad I read this . Was considering buying the Reggulator mostly due to the rain guard.  If I can’t toss it in the egg to clean it then that’s a no go .  Anyone have any ideas of making a rain guard for the daisy wheel?

I had to cook a pork butt once and it was raining cats and dogs.  Downpour!

I took a piece of aluminum foil, about 18" long, from the narrow roll.

I scrunched the ends around the bottom of the daisy wheel, and lifted the center up so I made an upside down U out of the foil.  The top of the upside down U was 4-6" above the daisy wheel.

The ends were open, so the daisy wheel functioned as normal.  I could still adjust, but the rain ran off the little "roof".

Don't buy a rEGGulator and rain cap for the two times in your life you will need to keep rain out of your egg.

    @alaskanassasin,
    - When I seen the daisy wheel was going away I bought one here locally at a Taylors Do It. Like yourself I dedicated one daisy wheel to the Smobot. However I eventually broke down and bought the Smobot adapter that was offered. That thing is slucker than snot and easy to clean.
    - While in the store they still had 2 rain caps and snagged those for bulhead mounted spares.
    - I use the latest daisy wheel purchase on my Kikuya Hibatchi Pot and retired the original slider top.
    - If you have any hesitation about that daisy wheel you linked, Primo's daisy wheel is the same circumference and very well built. However, it does not have the handle on it like the BGE offering did.
    - Be Safe.

I thought about getting that adapter plate… I’ll look into the adapter if it’s cheaper than a daisy. Whenever I get the regulator out of the rotation I’ll throw it on eBay or in the garage, that’s how strongly I dislike that thing.

  • It’s fat. Sit in the egg at 600 for 20min and the grease will be gone and your seasoning should survive. If not just reason it with some avocado oil or any other high smoke point

SmokeWare to the rescue or like I have used for years - a simple sheet metal cap available at any good home improvement stores for CHEAP! Only hint is to NEVER touch that rain cap with your bare fingers! TRUST ME!!!

Got to cook on it yesterday after lightly sanding the top rim with very fine sandpaper. Tried cooking a low n slow spicy whole chicken @225F. The chicken came out fantastic of course, spicy, moist, and tender. Best of all it was easy to adjust and move. Did I mention tasty!

I much prefer the Reggulator top to the old style.  The huge advantage is not taking it on and off and keeping up with a cap!  When it gets sticky I use a 3 in 1 tool to scrape off the gunk.  No big deal.

I switched to the smokeware top.  Great for rain.  Gets just as nasty but being stainless steel oven cleaner, sit in a bag, and rinse.  It dies dent easy when you drop it.  Works great

I have a smokeware, daisy and reggulator. I think the reggulator is by far the best. No more grease going down the back of the egg from daisy, it went alot longer than the smokeware before getting gummed up and holds its setting. Cleaning is dishsoap, warm water and a plastic scrub brush. Looks like new with a bit of elbow work.

When you line up the two machine bolts perpendicular to the back of your egg then opening and closing does not disturb the setting of the old style cap one tiny bit!
