ASAP Gasket help

I just put a brisket on for superbowl. I noticed the top gasket was crumbling so I took it off in hopes to make a tight seal. I noticed smoke still creeping out the sides and I can't keep the temp down. Any suggestions ASAP would be greatly appreciated

  • How about some flat shoestring around the rim and then maybe hang something from the handle to put downward pressure to keep a seal. Or maybe take some foil and make a little rope and then put it all the way around the ring. Then smash it down tight and hang something from the handle to keep it sealed? Last option, caulk it shut, slice it open in the morning with a knife. Hopefully one of the first 2 options would work.

I'm guessing that opening the grill is the culprit for not being able to keep the temp down. If you really think it's the leak maybe you could make a foil gasket?

Many people don't even use a gasket. You need to choke down the daisy wheel as much as you need to to maintain temp. And do not open the egg.

  • Choke down the other two sources of air, your intake and exhaust. You just have a third source of air and will need to accommodate. But the foil rope gasket could work if you really feel the need. I wouldn’t mess with it tho.
  • I used to have this problem, I cut strips from a cereal box and covered them with foil, it worked pretty well, Then got from RRP the good gasket and problem solved forever....

Yep, get a gasket from @rrp and never worry again. I put one on my large last fall, follow his directions and it is easy peasy.

+1 on this.  @SmokinBob629 hopefully you were able to get through your cook using one of the methods above.

Definitely contact @RRP for a new gasket (thank you Ron)!  Here are a few pics of my husband following RRP's instructions and @bluebird66 is right, it's easy peasy.

My husband said that even when our egg was brand new, he had never been able to maintain the egg's temp (until he installed the new gasket)--- game changer for us.
