I cut a lock off my boat trailer at the NOLA yacht club with a battery grinder.  It's loud AF.  No one seemed to care, tho.  The bolt cutters are fast and quiet but the big ones weight about 40 pounds.

nobody uses bolt cutters anymore....grinder with a cuttoff blade is light and fast
Wouldn’t that be much louder than bolt cutters? I would think discretion would be prioritized.

todays houses are so tight you would hardly hear a grinder. neighbor lost catalytics last spring in 6 trucks, on camera it wasnt more than three/four minutes per truck. my boat has a 6hp trolling motor thats cable locked, im betting someone would just cut part of the transom off with a reciprocating saw if they thought about it long enough.

Doesn't matter how well you lock sh!t up, if you want to solve the crime problem you need to fix the money problem, if you want to solve the money problem you need to fix the drug problem.  Since the drug problem is impossible to fix, just give drugs to addicts free in return for exposing them to some rehabilitation pathway.  This has worked in other countries.  Some redneck cops don't like it because they collect all kinds of cool stuff from the drug wars.  Think outside the box, peeeps

  • I also vote for keeping them covered so no one sees them if they are on a deck. Also, look for an apartment that has a garage, then you could wheel them outside to cook on them.

@fishlessman - I loaned my small BGE with nest to a friend and it was "allegedly" stolen from their backyard with a high wooden privacy fence.  They assumed it was pi$$ed off neighbors that took it. So now you know someone.
Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!

Get a Weber grill cover, the big one for the 27" kettle, nobody will know there's an egg inside

Bought my son a Weber Kettle when he moved out of the Frat house years ago.  It lasted a few months before someone absconded with it.

ive only had one thing stolen in the last maybe 40 years, an electric trolling motor and battery off a small row boat.  the guy next door has an addict for a son and i know it was him. its usually someone you know. i hope your friend made good with it. i put my small at a friends camp years ago, ive eaten so much off it i consider it his now

Battery powered cut off tools and sawzalls changed everything for stealing.  Cat converters wouldn’t be nearly the hit item they are now otherwise.  Around here, bikes are stolen in broad daylight usually by homeless that either chop them to part out or are stealing for some organization that moves lots of bikes. People hardly call the police because they won’t do much, can’t put them in jail with Covid, etc.  Its a bad mix of factors that has spiked bike thefts - and increases demand and reduced supply d/t Covid has created a much more lucrative market for warm bikes.
    Love you bro!

I'd rent a house instead if you have the means - I don't think any apartment allows for charcoal grills on patios, and with a house it (hopefully) solves concerns on theft.  Maybe a townhome/duplex?

High quality hardened chain combined with larger diameter means you have to use much larger cutters to to fit the larger links.
Thief would be more likely to smash your Egg just to steal the chain.

Don’t secure. Place a security eye on it and communicate (via sign or sticker) that the area is under security.

Typically, noise isn't an issue, but speed is. The plan is to get  out of there before there's any response. Might be difficult with an Egg.
I do like Nolaegghead's suggestion of drilling for a U-bolt. Ought to work fine.
And you can paint your phone number on the Egg, on the side visible to someone walking up.
