I made a fatal (to the food anyway) mistake today and thought this forum could benefit from my own stupidity.

I was attending a training session at work and figured I would easily have enough time to start dinner early. On the menu was spatchcocked chicken and baked potatoes. Easy peasy.

I decided to start the egg up during one of the breaks. I got it up to temp and came back with the potatoes and slapped them on during the next break. Spatchcock chicken was on deck and the CGS Adjustable rig was setup for potatoes on bottom, chicken on top, cruising right around 400F.

An hour goes by, training session is going along, I get a text from my wife: "the egg says it is at 600F, is that okay?"

No, definitely not. I slip out of the training session and when I get to the backyard I can tell something is wrong because there is a lot of smoke coming out of the egg. I look at the temp, it is 600 as my wife reported. I open up the lid to find four burnt baked potatoes and a roaring fire.

In my haste to return to the training session, I neglected to notice the arm from the CGS Adjustable Rig was lodged between the base and the lid causing a few mm gap and a 200F increase in temperature.

I recovered, got another set of potatoes on and saved dinner but it was certainly a humbling experience.

Work training session at home, nice.  I had one once via Zoom. I got a lot done around the house that day.
  • Every once a while I put the grid down on the PSWoo or Eggspander and it catches on the lip of the Egg.  I have always managed to catch it very early in the cook.

  • Did the same thing yesterday with pork shoulder minus the adjustable rig.  Mine went from 300 to 500 before I noticed it wasn't quite shut.
