Lowes Bolts Threads Stripping

After having the egg for a few years and moving a few times, my bands are a mess. I want to get the new style bands but they seem to be backordered forever. As a short-term fix until I get new bands, I've tried to replace the original bolts (threads eventually stripped) with carriage bolts from Lowes but the threads stripped on 2 consecutive bolts from Lowes. My local dealer said he has band hardware available for $12, will these bolts be better than the Lowes ones? What am I doing wrong?

What grade bolts did you use?

  • I went looking for the bolts with 3 lines (grade 5?) but they didn't have them so I got whatever I could find (probably grade 2?).

I have replaced mine with stainless steel and they've been taken on/off several times without issue. Did they bend at all or just strip? Maybe they were too soft?

I’ve been trying to find grade 5 carriage bolts out on Cape Cod. The big box stores closest to me (Home Depot, Lowes) and all the Ace Hardware stores only carry grade 2. Doesn’t matter if they are hot galvanized or zinc plated. Nothing other than grade 2. I know I need grade 5 because both my medium and large have grade 5 with the three marks.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to locate? The local Egg dealers also don’t have them.

    Thanks!

Homedepot carries stainless in the little drawers with the specialty items. The stainless always worked fine.

When we need structural grade bolts at work we send the crews to fastenal. They have grade 5 but check for your closest store. https://www.fastenal.com/product/fasteners/bolts/600001?categoryId=600001&level=2&fsi=1

If you have an Ace Hardware nearby, might check with them about a new band assembly.  My local Ace actually had 1 in stock for my large!  :o

Fastenal is a good place to check. If they don't have it, they can order anything you need.

    LOL

thanks for not slamming me for my usual suggestion of “double nutting” a bolt which will solve ANY new eggers problem for MANY years to come.

I heard you can only double-nut if your screw is long enough

Seriously though, from a practical engineering perspective, double nutting doesn't solve bolt stretch and isn't any better than using loc-tight/lock washers on bolts under tension.  Where it is absolutely necessary is if you need a nut to stay when it's not under tension and a nylon lock nut isn't strong enough or not practical because of heat.

@PTK125 I’m on the outer Cape and I think the Ace in Orleans carries grade 5. If you’re not near here or they don’t have it, there’s a Fastenal in Hyannis. Last resort, stop by a local auto or equipment repair place, preferably one that knows you. Almost all of them have hardware bins and most would be willing to help you out.

I Prefer flange nuts. Then pinch nuts, and finally nylon lock nuts.

Are you saying you don't "double nut"?

If you double nut a tensioned thread, use a small nut on the load side.

My mom just got some hardware installed in her hip.  Ceramic/plastic screws/balls/whateverz because she has a metal allergy.   Back hair is under control according to JIC, but thanks for the help, she usually only needs it after a full moon.
