Egg Genius Pros/Cons

Hello fellow egg heads! I am contemplating the purchase of the egg genius. For this that have made the purchase, what are your thought's? Its not cheap, but is it worth it? What would you say are the biggest pros & cons to using it?

Thanks!

Jim

Ive been using one for about a year,  I only use it for cooks that run more than a couple of hours like ribs, briskets, butts, etc.  It is a lot of fun and a very cool gadget.

I can’t think of any cons with it,  I also purchased the optional battery and additional meat probe,

There a lot of controllers out there that work just as well and may be cheaper, but I had always heard good things about Flame Boss (they make the Genius) and their customer service is excellent.

Cons...you always need a smart device to view or change settings. For this reason alone, I would not own it. But I do like the FB 500.
    Thank you,

  • @jmikol0208 I had an egg genius for a while.  I hated having to get my phone out while gloved up to check meat temps.  Or even worse having to go inside to get my phone that I left on a table just to check temps.  I dumped it and went to a flame boss 500.  Much better having a display that I can see when I walk up to the egg in addition to the info on my phone.

I'm not a fan of any of these devices. I bought a BBQ Guru DigiQ DS-2 years ago and it worked fine. Still does as far as I know, but I only used it for overnight cooks. Once I discovered turbo cooking, I can start a butt at 9-10 AM and be done by dinner time. No overnights and it's no trouble to walk outside from time to time to make sure all is well (which it almost always is). Especially if you're retired, working from home or only do such cooks over the weekend. Couldn't care less about graphs and charts. Or monitoring while away from the house (I never leave home with the grill going).

    Save your money for meat!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

There is a noticeable price difference between the FB400 and FB500, but between the not so much between the EggGenius (FB400 "+") and the FB500 (especially when you add the probes.....because of the added cost of y-adapters.)  If you don't care about not having the green case, just get the FB500.  Then you have a screen, control unit, mounting bracket, and you don't have to use y-adapters.  Makes it a lot easier to set up if you have any hiccup with your network/router too.

I have the genius, received it as a gift. It works good tending the temperature. One thing I appreciate is the ability is to use the extra probes in the neighboring egg to keep track of multiple items temp. If it wasn't a gift I more than likely wouldn't have bought it or anything like it, I like to play with fire. But for what I  paid for it, I love it.
