OT: Vehicle warranties after manufactures runout

Has anyone tried a warranty policy with the various companies like Car Shield & etc?
Reason why I ask is that my current mode of transportation is a 2007 Chevy Silverado with
relatively low miles, app. 47,500 and have a uneasy feeling that something major will breakdown
in the near future.

To each his own, but my suggestion is a very simple  formula. What is the annual cost AND do get in writing just how long the annual fee is guaranteed TIMES how long you plan to keep it!

BTW I have NO aftermarket insurance for my:

    ’95 Corvette
    ’99 Mercedes
    ’05 Chevy Captiva

self insurance may not work for everyone, but it has saved me a bundle!

It’s been a while, but I believe many aftermarket warranties are known for having a lot of exclusions, limits and restrictions on cost of replacement parts and labor, more so than factory extended warranties.
    Love you bro!

Yes VW ID4. I think that I posted it in the what did you buy thread. I posted including pictures Sunday anyway and wrote the check on Monday. First moderately long trip today.

Good luck and let me know how you get on! Saw my first ID3 this week, the same one a few times, so it must be local.

bought one with the 2010 rover, they would budge on the price of the rover but dropped the warranty by 50 percent. that being said, the truck had 83k on it, ive put almost 50k more miles on it since and never used it. out of pocket expense was a battery, a break line, and the third break light for about 600 out of pocket. not bad so far

Set up a emergency fund of 3-6 months of expenses. Use it if for emergencies like major car repair you don’t have the cash for. That said I wouldn’t worry about it. Solid truck the only thing that should give you problems is AC.

Consider yourself ahead of the game, most people pay $500 a month car payments so if you have to dump a grand in it a year you are way ahead.

Is an extended warranty like car shield worth it?  short answer: "no".  long answer; "nope"

Essentially, the monthly premiums cost about as much as just saving up and paying the average 1500 a year people spend on older cars.

it also doesn't cover anything like "gee, your such-n-such wore out"  it only covers literal breakdown.  no scheduled maintenance, no normal wear and tear, etc.

vast majority of those who paid the premiums have said it saved them no money

When I bought my 2019 Jeep Wrangler I purchase Mopar’s Lifetime unlimited mileage warrenty for 3K. This is not a 3rd party policy, it’s directly from Mopar. All the major components (transmission, engine, cooling and fuel systems, drivetrain, steering, air conditioning  and suspension) as well as all electrical components (all instrumentation,  heated seats, radio and power groups are covered. The expiration date on the policy is 11/2/2119. Unfortunately they stopped selling the unlimited mileage with Lifetime coverage last year or so and replaced it with a Max time of 8-10 yrs. I’m guessing they looked at what they are selling and said we are going to lose to much money on this. I’m planning to own this vehicle  for a very long time so for me it was worth it. Just swapping out my entertainment system would be close to $1500 never mind the transmission. At the end of the day it’s peace of mind that matters.

With very, very few exceptions, extended warranties on *everything*(1) are great for the guys selling them and a waste of money for those purchasing.

    (1) "Everything" includes vehicles, tools, consumer electronics, appliances, etc.

If it's going to break, it usually happens during the default warranty period.  In the long run, you always come out behind with these nickle and dime fees.

The reason outlets "push" their sales associates to sell them is because they're almost pure profit.   I'm so annoyed when I buy a $20 dollar tool at Harbor Freight and they want to sell me a service warranty.  Never bought one of them in my life.  It's hard enough to get service with the factory warranty.

My buddy's old Prius OBD system was telling him his batteries are bad.  After about a month of this, he decides he needs to get a new car, or he read you can take the terminals off all the batteries and clean them, etc.   I told him let's just try resetting all the error codes.  So hooked up my OBDII dongle and reset them.  All the errors went away, battery works fine.  That was 6 months ago.

I purchased one aftermarket warranty ....once and never again.
It was a gigantic cluster and at the end of the day I still had to pay out of pocket for the parts and labor to get my truck out of the shop...and was not reimbursed

15-20 or so years back I had a 3rd party warranty on a Olds Aurora.  The policy was "exclusionary", that is to say it had a specific list of items not covered, everything else on vehicle was covered.  It was a short list that mostly contained consumables/maintenance items... fluids and changes, belts, battery, tires, interior/exterior wear etc.  Should you buy a warranty I'd suggest shopping for this type.  Also, other than a deductible you should not be required to pay the shop, insurance provider should pay the shop directly.
All that said, even with several covered repairs I came out on the short end of the stick.  I am in the camp with those saying pay for repairs out of pocket as they occur.
What is giving you the feeling that something major is about to go bad?
