Fan Damper Sticking

How do you unstick the fan damper so it can be easily adjusted during a cook?  Mine has deposits from cooks which make it hard to move.

There is actually a chance that the tracks of your damper have gotten slightly crimped and therefore the damper is getting pinched. Inspect both upper and lower tracks for visible dents. If you find any then merely take a slotted screwdriver and carefully straighten out the curved dent.

Guess maybe I misunderstood you - if you mean the damper like in say a BBQ Guru, then there is still a chance that it got slightly bent and all you need to do is straighten it! I know my damper would accidentally close since it moved so freely that I purposefully put a slight curve in mine.

I used to get creosote build up on the pit viper every so often. I would just wipe it out with a paper towel every so often to prevent built up. The new version uses a dial.

I have had both the old pit viper fan RRP showed a picture of and a newer version.  I get a hard sticky residue on the damper most of which is inside the housing making it hard to move the damper.  A paper towel is of no use.

I’m curious why you would be getting creosote blown back in. It is as if the fan isn’t powerful enough to overcome some strange resistance which should be air easily moving out of the cap on top.

I can understand some smoke residue is getting on that damper, it's mostly closed.  But I would be surprised if any got past that....in the fan/blower for example.
