Large egg new style bands/hinge

Last year I picked up a set of the newer style bands/hinges for my 2016 large egg. I love how they function over the old style bands but definitely noticed right away the decrease in how far you can open the dome. My buddy just came down today and I was showing him my egg. He’s got a 2020 medium with the nest handler and said his done opens up way further. Got me wonder does the best handler change the hinge/spring points and allow the dome to open further?

  • I have the Nest handler, and it doesn't change anything about the spring or hinge points. It's held on via a couple of the acorn nuts from that section, but that's it.

I don’t think the nest handler changes anything.

My bands got all wonky about 2 years ago, and I finally changed them out recently. I heard that the new bands don’t allow for the lid to be opened as high as the old style did, so I was reluctant to get the new style bands.

There seems to be a soft stop, and then the fully open position. I don’t know how this compares to the old style bands,  but I have not noticed any significant difference when egging.

  • When I built my outdoor kitchen I had 5 eggs, 4 larges an an XL.  I had both hinge designs and I made it a point to keep one large with the old style hinge. I especially like the extra clearance when grilling.

Close to 16 from the bottom of the handle and about 15 from the top lip to bottom. Seems a little less than the old school Hinges but man it handles so much better than they did. Maybe the medium has a wider opening or it’s an optical illusion.

Good to see people in here comparing how many inches they have.
