Non-Flame Boss / Genius Pit Probes with Genius Unit?

So the other day the alligator clip end of the pit probe that came with my Egg Genius pulled clean off the wire. It didn't look like the wire was broken in any way, so I just popped it back in, and when I checked the probe by putting it in some boiling water, it was pretty close, so I think all is OK.

However, it got me to thinking - has anyone tried using another brand of pit probe with the Egg Genius / Flame Boss unit? I can't see why it wouldn't work. The Flame Boss / Egg Genius probes seem a little on the pricy side for what you get, so I was thinking why not try something a little cheaper, but wanted to check in with the experience of others first.
