Kabobs on the Egg, v2

I posted about my bacon/bourbon 'bobs yesterday, and was a bit unhappy with not having crispy edges (bobs were just too far from the flames, and I didn't want to fill the whole Egg up to the top with lump).  Got an idea in the shower this morning (that's where my best ideas usually form):
1.  Pull my Kick-Ash Basket out of the Egg,
2.  Put my CI grate on top of the Fire Ring,
3.  Set the KAB on top the CI grate,
4.  Set another grate directly over the KAB, guiding the KAB handles in between the grate wires,
5.  Light, and grill away!

Well, I forgot about the grate crossbars, but this looked like it might work:

(I did remember to check that the lid would go all the way down, to snuff the fire; it did)  The Rutland starter cube, at full flame, threatened the wood handle on the Egg's lid, but it was 32º out and the wood handle was fine.

Partial Success.  My 'bobs had nice crispy edges.  But, this FrankenRig was a bit unstable, I wouldn't want to try more than two kabobs at once.  Halfway thru the cook I removed the 'bobs, and the top grate, and then just laid the skewers across the top edge of the KAB (not its handles) and that got them even closer to the coals, but I had to weigh down the skewer handles with my baste pot on the side shelf; again, not very stable (wish I'd taken a pic of that).  So, some possibilities here:

1.  Buy another, dedicated KAB and cut the handles off; this would be a lot more stable and gets the 'bobs close to the coals.  I don't cook kabobs enough for this to be a financially-sensible solution.
2.  I then noticed, the gaps in my CI grate are about as wide as they are on the KAB; why not just pour the lump onto my CI grate, then use my wire thingie (woo? spider?) to elevate the top grate, very close to the top of the bowl?  Stand by for v3.
3.  Suspend the KAB, by its handles, on two steel rods resting on the top edge of the Egg bowl, then set the grate on top of that?  Wouldn't be able to extinguish the lump very easily, doing that; would have to just let it burn up.
4.  McGyver-up something else?  I love a challenge!

Thanks for looking.

if you have a charcoal lighting chimney, fill it up, and let it rip. Place a grid on top, and go.

Do you have a spider? Set the spider in place, KAB in the spider, grid on the ceramic ring.

To work with what you have, why not fill the egg with lump and grill the protein with the grid at whatever level you usually cook?

I've been toying with that idea, too.  Kabobs even wouldn't require a grid.
