Thermapen pet peeve

Don’t know how she does it, but every time my wife touches the Thermapen, be it for use or cleaning, it ends up with water under the silicone jacket. I am convinced that she could be in the Sahara and that this would still happen if she touched it.

Well, I have too much class to state the obvious here....so I won't. ;)

Ok,  Just that she is wet when she uses it (her hands, you perverts).  People will misconstrue that, but simply put, that seems obvious, but maybe not to everyone.

Beeyotch #2:  I have an older model (no silicone jacket) but the lanyard/wrist strap hook is right next to the notched ear that secures the thin tip of the probe, and it gets tangled up in that hook at least 2/3rds of the time, Gah!!  I would just remove the strap, but as clumsy as I am it'd be broken or burned within a week.  [/soapbox]

Mine grows legs and hides. I still have my red one and my yellow one but the purple has been hiding for 4 years.

I'm missing my MK4 that has a nice silicone jacket.  It's been a year, I'm hoping it will turn up.  The the old pink one works fine tho.

  • My MK4 is off limits to SWMBO. I bought a thermopop just for her to use. Not that she ever does

You should. It would appear they are good at catching liquids and we don’t need no (more?) Hogsons and/or Hogdaughters running amok.

I just want my Thermapen to turn on consistently when I open it. I also would like my Timesticks to stop failing after a year of light use. I'm on my 3rd. The only Thermoworks product that's worked consistently for me is their Thermopop.

    Same here.

Bought an original and a water-resistant one.

Both dead in the drawer. I’ll throw them out eventually.

I'm team Lavatools now.  Much prefer the javelins to the Thermapens.

Love my Javelin Pro. Lavatools has a 15% discount code just for us... "egghead". Just checked, still works. Also, free shipping over $30.

    EDIT: https://www.lavatools.co

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • I just don’t get it....

  • I had similar frustration about thermapen not turning on at first open and called their service line. They said it was just the battery and a new one should get back to normal. It worked for me.  It was several years old at the time and this was first battery replacement.  Also happy with the $40 DASH from them— take it on trips where we will be cooking.

Two thermapops and I’ve given them as gifts to a lot of family and friends that didn’t use thermometers.   Never a problem with them.  I’ve never tried the ‘pen.
    Love you bro!
  • Had my Thermopen 6 years. No issues what so ever. On 3’rd battery and SWMBO uses it in kitchen cooking as much as I use outside

I got both. You’re not missing much. Pen is a tiny bit faster, but at the price discrepancy, the Pop is a much better buy, IMO. I take it every time I travel.

My Thermopen (on its second battery, replaced around 2 years ago) at 10 years of age needs to initially be fully opened  to register the temp.  Being anal I also have a javelin pro duo (much newer).  I like the temperature flip read display and the price point.  To be fair, Thermopen was the only game in town for many years.  FWIW-

  • I have two thermapens. One doesn’t work at all and the second is very finicky when you open it. Both batteries have been changed. Not sure what’s wrong with the blue one but the red one that’s finicky acts like it has a bad connection somewhere. I won’t buy another one. My dads therma-pop I gave him years ago still works.

I gave up on Lavatools when mine broke when I opened it up.  It was maybe 2 years old when it broke.  My Thermapen has been going strong for6 years or so.  Of course I probably just jinxed myself!

    Happy Thermoworks customer here.

Bought first thermapen from mollyshark 12 yr ago, it died 1.5 yr later due to user error (splashed water on it when changing aquarium water). They sent me a brand new one free of charge even though it was out of warranty and I was at fault.

While waiting for the replacement I didn't know how to cook, no kidding. Didn't want to ever get caught without a thermapen again, I used the money 'saved' and bought myself a 'spare' thermapen. Over a decade later they are both working fine, of course there's no silicone sleeve to trap moisture.
