    Pretty slanted article.

No matter which side of the fence you sit on regarding such lockdowns, seems like an awful waste of our collective resources to deliberately provoke such a police response. Aside from the huge money spent dealing with the actions of this individual, the opportunity cost of the officers not being able to address other more important matters is significant. Now it would appear supporters are forking out over $175K and counting for his legal bills.

I take his point about Costco, Amazon, etc., but these are the channels by which most of us obtain basic necessities. Yes, they are big multinationals, but consistent with the advice of Warren Buffet, they trade in the items we consume daily, which is largely why they have become these big, successful multinationals. You’re always going to be at greater risk of greater financial instability if you deal in niche products or services.

My wife is self-employed and had to halt her business and then pivot her service delivery model in the wake of Covid. As a result, she was out of work for a time and, though has now resumed in different form, has had to greatly reduce her hours, significantly impacting upon our income - not only for fixed periods like a few weeks and then 28 days, but solidly since March, when the pandemic began. Her inability to work in the manner she had been working is also the direct result of decisions taken by the very same officials named in the article. This, to say that I’m not in an ivory tower - our household is directly impacted in the way that the business owner in this article is, albeit to a different, and very likely to a greater financial extent.

If the business owner thinks he knows better than our elected officials, then he should follow the appropriate channels and run for office instead of playing such games to build a name for himself. Heck, he could have pivoted in the way my wife did, by developing things like rubs and sauces, leading cooking classes, making cooking videos or even changing his line of work. If there’s one thing that irks me, it’s people who reap the benefits of others’ adherence to our collective societal rules only to themselves disregard them when it doesn’t suit them. Sometimes, “what if everyone did it?” is the right question, and I think it’s a valid question to ask, even when you don’t agree with the policy position.

    Rant over.

Respect and kudos to your wife, my friend. Looking on the bright side, this could be a blessing in disguise and lead to something bigger than pre COVID.

He’s not the only small business impacted, there are more civil ways to protest without wasting so much law enforcement resources, BUT he won’t get even a tiny fraction of the publicity and IG following he’s getting by pulling this stunt. Think of the girl who climbed a construction crane for selfie, or the one who threw a chair from downtown high rise balcony, all they got was a slap on the wrist.

AFAIK he operated out of one location only for years and most folks were not aware of his 2nd and 3rd, now everyone knows.  How about starting Operation BBQ movement to feed the needy or thank front line workers? Nay, that’s too much work.

To be fair, they shouldn’t allow big box stores to sell non essential merchandise if small businesses selling same items are locked down. Loblaws chain of grocery stores are selling big screen TVs  :s

  • @Canugghead: Thanks, friend. Truth be told, I’m liking her working a little less. The only downside (apart from the income hit) is that she’s mostly working evenings, which means we’ve got a little less time together and I parent are two little ones solo while she’s working.
