OT - Hemp and CBD Oil - OT

CBS Morning News had an interesting story this morning about hemp, and CBD oil.
Hemp has been cultivated for thousands of years, with no real issues.  In the early 1900s it was outlawed in the US, supposedly due to its being in the same herb family as marijuana, which was condemned as the Drug of the Devil back then.

Turns out, hemp can be processed into cloth and ropes, which infuriated the US cotton industry at that time; can be distilled into a fuel that would actually run in Henry Ford's Model T, which infuriated the oil industry; and can easily be made into paper, which infuriated the timber industry in the US.  Hence, it was outlawed.

Sound familiar?   =)

President Obama relaxed the laws against hemp during his administration, and the following administration signed further relaxations.  Oil is a popular energy source as it can be shipped trans-continentally easily, and even inter-continentally via ship.  Hemp fuel is very bulky (albeit light) and is more suitably grown locally, which is exactly what's happening in places around the US, very interesting.

Now, let's talk CBD oil, a derivative of hemp.  While it does contain minute amounts of THC (the component in marijuana that gets you high) it cannot make you high on its own, hence the lifting of restrictions.  Supposedly, however, the pain and anti-inflammation effects of the other components of MJ are there in full force, which is why CBD oils and products have become so popular recently (not sure if Big Pharma has gotten involved yet...).

When I went home for Mom's funeral/property-sorting last spring, I learned that my sister and BIL were heavily into CBD oil and singing its praises (even Mom was taking it, to reduce the pain of her spine contracting 3").  Sis gave me a bottle of the oil to try out for myself.  When I got back home I also ordered some CBD cream, hoping it would alleviate the arthritis in my wrist (the stuff is expensive).  The cream "may" be helping my wrist, the oil didn't do a thing for me (I got fooled into the "Super Blue-Green Algae/Klamath Falls OR" snake oil/pyramid scheme back in the early '90's, so I'm naturally suspicious of such things anymore).

I'm curious, does anyone here use any CBD products, and are they working for you?  Anyone inject CBD into a brisket?  Let me know!

Cream doesn’t work but oil does. It has been a game changer for me.  I have severe pain in a knee and I pretty much stopped using opioids.  It gives no buzz at all and doesn’t make me sleepy.

  • I have some relatives who do use it successfully. I do have some tooth paste that has hemp oil as one of the ingredients.
If you have some time to spare, go to ewetube and search for hemp car and then for hempcrete.

VERY interesting!  How do you apply the oil to your knee, if I may ask? (PM is fine)

Couple of drops under the tongue for oil but I use gel caps too so you basically take those like a pill.  Oil is better IMHO.  Talk to your doctor about injections, I get cortisone shots every 3 months and hyaluronan twice a year.  Nothing is perfect but the combination makes it bearable.

Hemp used to be a major cash crop in Missouri before it got outlawed.  Read up on its use in construction/concrete.....pretty cool stuff.

As far as the oil goes, I don't know anything about it other than what I saw on the news a while ago.  They went and measured various products from the dozens of cbd stores than are in every zip code around here now.  Over half the samples came back with a negligible amount of whatever is supposed to be the active ingredient.  Almost all of them were well under what they stated as the average percentage.

And one had a bunch of THC in it......which is the only reason I am posting this.  Even if your state has legalized everything under the sun, If you have a pilot's certificate, a CCW permit, a FFL, or any other federal licensure/certificate/controlled item, the feds don't give a crap how it got in your system.  Doesnt matter you were poisoned with a controlled substance, if you get popped with it on a random, you're toast.  Same story with your employer probably.  If everyone could cry, "it was the cbd", then they would.

So, just saying, be careful with that stuff and know who you are getting it from.....could cost you a job or you could be just getting some canola oil.

Have no experience with hemp, but SWMBO uses CBD with no THC and it has helped exponentially with depression. I would use the CBD for overall health if I wasn’t too afraid off popping a p!ss test at work.

No worries if you buy a reputable big brand.  I won't eat the generic fugu

I have seen ads marketed specifically toward LE, I’m just too paranoid of IA to try it.

Reminds me of the diet/fat loss pills. Is it really just caffeine or is it.....meth?
Hmm...Regardless, I’m not buying anything from a pop-up CBD store or diet pills

  • I buy mine from a guy here in town who grows and extracts his own. This run he used high proof whiskey as the carrying agent instead of another oil. It’s awesome.

My wife and some of her friends kept telling me to use it for all my joint problems. I begrudgingly tried for 2 weeks.

Stuff works. Not a miracle but it helped with inflammation and pain without the foggy painkiller courtesy of big pharm.

I'm licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a hemp grower and processor. We are small scale / boutique and we grow indoors and outdoors. We gave a way a ton of free samples of an all organic, food quality CBD salve and now people keep requesting more for arthritis / joint pain.  I do find that it relaxes me when I ingest.  THC level has to be <0.3% so no high.

I’m with you @botch I gave a tincture and balm a go. I researched brands spent decent money on the 2 items and tried it for like 2 months.  Nothing not a difference.  I know there is a lot of variability in brands and carriers but I feel duped even a year later.

I personally have wasted at least $300 on CBD oil. I mean supposedly the highest quality from reputable local pharmacies. Also a jar of cream. I know some folks believe it works and more power to them, but I feel it is snake oil or at least it does nothing for my issues of neuropathy and shoulder pain.

Make a long story short...my local Nick and Willies franchise operator also works as a licensed agent to give random drug and substance tests around the MidWest. While making my pizzas he has told me more than one sad story confirming what @stlcharcoal just said. Employees with years and years of service were caught up with this career ending issue early on. I keep waiting for Brent to show up and yell at everyone about peer reviewed science.

I don’t think you’re going to see a ton of pharma companies pursuing this.  It’s out there as a supplement, we need more academic studies.  It’s also not typically put forth as a cure, more for pain management, generalized inflammation and mood regulating.  There are a few good studies on juvenile seizures and that’s the most focused research that I’ve seen, but I don’t go looking for this - could be others.

Anecdotally, I've heard the inflammation and pain stories, some report relief, some don’t.  If you feel it helps you, great.  If it doesn’t, put your money away.  My experience is with my dad who had Alzheimer’s and had some really bad bouts of anxiety and frustration.  CBD seemed to level his moods out some.

Lastly, what’s actually in the bottle or cream has huge variability company to company right now.  No idea how to sort that out as a consumer, just be aware.

Forgot to add, we had a lab that was slowly dying of lymphoma earlier this year.  Vet suggested CBD as he showed signs of anxiety, restlessness and being on alert inappropriately.  It became difficult to leave him alone.  CBD oil from the local natural pet store had a dramatic positive effect, we kept him on this for another four months successfully managing his behavioral symptoms until his physical illness took him.

Good comments @Legume.  Big Pharma is waiting for the feds to decriminalize it.  Just because the states do so doesn't mean the feds will allow it.  Big Pharma prefers national opportunities, not local ones. p.s. I meant to comment on @Legume's immediately prior post.

Big pharma may jump in from an OTC, supplement perspective, but to fund clinical trials to be able to make claims, I think most companies will want patent protection beyond just a use patent.  I think good research is going to need to come from academia on this.

dad tried the cream and oils for wrist pain, nothing.  9 drunken raisins a day and pain free. the dr prescribed the hydroxychloroquine and it just messed him up and still couldnt use his hands. if you google the drunken raisin its golden raisins soaked a week in a juniper style gin.

  • I gave the oil a shot, hoping it would ease my wrist arthritis. No luck there, but I splurged on CBD cream, crossing my fingers for relief. Maybe a hint of improvement, but nothing groundbreaking. It's intriguing how everyone's experience varies!

Speaking of unexpected results, a friend shared a unique twist. He infused CBD into a brisket marinade, claiming it created a flavor explosion. I'm tempted to try, but the skeptic in me hesitates. Has anyone else here experimented with CBD in cooking? Also, anyone find success with CBD products for pain relief? Let's swap stories.

Oh, and on a positive note, a close pal found solace in medical cannabis for chronic pain. It's amazing how nature surprises us.
