I picked up a plastic storage box from Sam's on clearance.  It is 5' long, 2" deep and 27" wide.  It holds a ton of wood and has a nice lid to keep things dry.

If they're not kept in the sun pretty much any container will do. I like @QDude idea of using a deck box sort of thing. My deck box is many years old and the sun hasn't bothered it a bit.

If they're stored in the sun I use a few of the commercial grade Rubbermaid BRUTE containers. They are very heavy duty and hold up well to the weather.
For splits for my KBQ I keep them in a commercial grade plastic trash can.

I have the KBQ also.  I use the deck box for the post oak wood for this smoker.

I'm no carpenter either but I was able to put up a wood shed a few years back. It comes in handy for firewood. I also store some smaller splits in it for the KBQ. You could make a smaller version of it without too much of a hassle.
